Don't kill the messenger -smoking compliant

Recommended Posts

Did you find an officer and request (demand) they enforce their own rules? If not, why not? If so, and the office did nothing, did you report it up the chain of command?

I was recently on the Dream as well, and while the " chain of command " starts lower than the officers, I did use the chain of command to report problems with smokers in the casino bar. But unless they install a permanent dividing bar to separate the smoking/non-smoking area, it's hard to control inconsiderate smokers.

Yes, I understand that the chain of command starts at the lowest deck washer, but I suggested an officer as their response to a situation wouldn't be influenced by the possible loss of a tip. Personally, i'd grab the first person in white that I saw and if none were available, i'd ask one of the other crewmen to find one for me and file the complaint/request to enforce rules with the officer. I would also get their name and if said request was not acted upon, I would then go up the chain of command from their. But the issue you had was with smoke moving from an authorized smoking area into a non-smoking area. The poster I quoted was complaining about actually smoking in a non-smoking area which is different. One is an engineering issue, the other is a violation of the rules.

Designated smoking areas are listed in the Fun Times. However, not all smokers smoke only in the designated areas. My problem is not so much with smokers, but that Carnival does not enforce their own policies. I just sailed the Dream out of NOLA, and there were more smokers than usual, and many were smoking in non smoking areas. C'mon Carnival enforce your policies!

A few years ago, My friend and I were on Dream. Smoking was on Lido. Last year she went on Dream, and the smoking on Lido no linger existed. I don't know where they put it. I've yet to figure out why the change because no Guy Burger stand is involved.

I know on the Conquest class of ships, smoking is 1 deck above the Lido on deck 10. Possibly the same on the Dream??

No, my issue was not smoke moving from an authorized area to an unauthorized area. It was smokers removing the no smoking signs, then moving to the no smoking area. So the issues are the same, smokers in a no smoking area.

Maybe I didn't notice because I was a non-smoker at the time. I just never remember being allowed to smoke inside a cabin and wouldn't have done it even if allowed. If (when I smoked) I didn't smoke inside of my own house I definitely wouldn't smoke in someone else's.

Smoking in cabins was permitted on our first cruise in 2008. By 2010, our second cruise, things had changed - which was fine.

In August 2009, you were allowed to smoke inside the cabins. That was the last year or possibly 2010 last year, if I'm not mistaken. I remember checking prices for the following year and coming in here and the confusion over the date of it. RCC had already put a stop to it in 2009. When I sailed with them you were still allowed to.

Carnival did not make cabins non-smoking until 2011.

An Officer:confused: What officers deal with customers:confused: If approached they would just direct you to Guest services or Housekeeping! lol.

The officers run the ship not the day to day running of cruise hotel services! lol

Thanks for the grats.

I guess I should clarify why the Casino smoke bothered me. It wasn't the fact of people smoking in the casino, it was the SHEAR VOLUME of smoke floating in the air. It was like walking into a fog. If the smoking is going to be in the Casino it should be ventilated a bit better.

The Casino smoking is a smart move on Carnivals part.

Oh i'll go down and smoke a couple cigarettes....might as well play a few bucks on the slots.... Its a sure money maker for them.

It was reported, and I was told by security not to engage the smokers. I did not follow up to see if a particular incident was resolved. I was on a Cruise to have fun, and I was not going to spend my entire cruise running back and forth, and up the chain of command, to tattle tale on every violator of the policy. It is not up to me to insure their policies are followed, it is up to Carnival, and they have been told. If they will not enforce their policies then I would hope non smokers would send a message and take their business elsewhere. JMHO

Well, sorry about that, but you didn't state previously that smokers were removing signage. I agree, they were breaking the rules and in my opinion, should have been given the old "heave ho".

In another year or two, they'll catch up and ban balcony smoking. Carnival has never been a leader on this issue.

Maybe not. If they find they have increased balcony sails by those who want to smoke but can't on other lines, they may not change the policy. You never know (BTW, NCL also allows smoking on their balconies so Carnival is not alone in this policy).

Violating rules has nothing to do with Housekeeping or Guest Services. It has to do with security and safety which any officer worth a grain of salt had better handle and that is one of their primary duties....to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew.

Okay. I'm ready for the onslaught. Dear God Carnival , I just read smoking is allowed in all dance clubs, God help me. So I can't go there , all the boards have commented about the interesting boat layout so I have to go thru smoke filled areas to easley navigate , last year on the Glory I had a great time but missed so much .... How difficult would it really be to go and smoke out the side of the boat where is is allowed and have at least 1 dance club non smoking... I have already resigned myself to no balcony but it would be nice to be able to enjoy the boat, and no don't refer me to a more restrictive cruise line, I want affordable just like everyone else..can't it be 50/50 no smoking in major transit spaces.....I have many friends who do smoke, they have no problem going to a different area, not one of them would have a problem with restrictions okay flame away I am ready

I'm a smoker and I agree with you. I don't even smoke in my own house. Anyway, Carnival should, in my opinion not allow smoking in at least one club for those who do not wish to be around smokers and certainly no smoking in major transit spaces but each ship is different in layout so you may well have to endure some smoking designated areas. I think that is just part of the price you pay being around 3000 other people in tight quarters.

Having part of the casino non smoking seems reasonable to me BUT I have read many complaints that non smokers couldn't enjoy the casino because there was just no way to avoid the smoke wafting over. Unfortunately, I think Carnival knows that the majority of their gambling guests are smokers and I don't think they want to end that cash cow.

There are only a few places on the deck where smokers are allowed which is spelled out in Carnival policy. I think those are a bit restrictive but again, I don't mind going to the designated area.

As other point out, spa balconies are non smoking so why not book a spa cabin? But honestly, a regular cabin balcony is not automatically putting you through smoking agony. There is always plenty of breathable air it would seem to me.

Best of luck to you!
