People to People Tip?

Recommended Posts

I am interested in the People to People program I read about on here. I have read that it is a free program, but many people said they left a big tip. I am curious as to opinions on what amount would seem appropriate. I realize they are using their gas & time to show us around and I would definitely tip anyway, but I have no idea how much. For example, would a $20 tip be insulting? Would a $100 tip be excessive? Thanks!!!

We wanted to to this. We filled out the form and was contacted shortly after confirming the application and stating someone would contact us closer to sail date. We made contact a couple of times before leaving, but wasn't contacted by our person until be returned home.....:(

What cruise line are we talking about? Carnival? If so, best to check out the Carnival board, here:

I am going on Carnival, but this isn't a Carnival excursion. I think it's kind of like a cultural ambassador program sponsored by the Bahamian govt. It's a free program. Someone volunteers to show you around & give you a real Bahamas experience, not a tourist experience.

Hmmm, I actually read a couple posts saying similar things. Some ppl didn't get a response at all. All the posts from ppl that did get to do it though seemed to be overwhelmingly positive.

Is this an excursion? If so, you are already paying for their time and gas with the fee. $100 tip for anything sounds way excessive, to me!

No, it's not an excursion. I was actually thinking along those lines though, about how much I would pay if it were. I would imagine a good guided tour would prob be about $50pp. There will be 4 of us. So I don't think a $20 tip is sufficient (because the program is totally free). I was just wondering what others that have done it offered. Most just stated they left a big tip. Having been a waitress in the past, a "big" tip is totally subjective, so I have no idea what amount they are around or think is appropriate.

I would think it would depend on how many hours and how good the guide is.

I'd figure about $10-15 an hour per person in party for a good guide.

NM Lady & TC1957, I think both those sound like good ideas. I'll use the $10-15 pp per hr & the price of a similar excursion as guidelines. Krazy Kruizers, it would be for the day. If you are actually flying over rather than a cruise, it could prob be longer though. I think they hook you up w/ someone ahead of time that you can email back & forth w/ so they can get a feel of what kind of things you're interested in seeing & you go from there.
