Clarea Posted August 23, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 23, 2014 Did you know that standard tips are added to your onboard account now? You can have them charged to your credit card which should convert them back to your currency.

hallasm Posted August 23, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 23, 2014 The currency at the ship is USD - also in Europe
peteukmcr Posted August 23, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 23, 2014 Staff working in the Mediterranean and Western Europe welcome additional tips in euros as it saves them having to exhange USD to Euros using RCI unfavourable rates to spend ashore during port calls. Melozone Posted August 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 23, 2014 I used Euros if I had them, if not I used US dollars. But if all you have is Sterling, I thing they will be grateful!
The Viking Posted August 24, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 24, 2014 Dollars of course Sent from my iPhone using Forums Please explain why. So if I cruise on a Europen cruiseline on a ship, based in the USA for half a year on more, I should pay in Euro of Sterling and not in $?

soccerref Posted August 24, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 24, 2014 You should tip in the currency the ship is using. Why? There are countries in the world where US$ are not readily accepted. If the ship's itinerary goes to these countries and crew members do get time ashore and they do purchase goods/use transport then I am certain they would be glad to have some local currency without having to change $. Tip in what ever you think is appropriate.
davenew Posted August 24, 2014 #11 Share Posted August 24, 2014 Staff working in the Mediterranean and Western Europe welcome additional tips in euros as it saves them having to exhange USD to Euros using RCI unfavourable rates to spend ashore during port calls. Its also acceptable to give them Sterling, as we did on the IOS. The crew love shopping in Southampton, especially Primark, so Sterling is used. We asked, and thats what they told us. That being said I see no problem with tipping in any currency as any tip is better than no tip.
Veslefrikk Posted August 24, 2014 #13 Share Posted August 24, 2014 When we cruise in Europe, we use Euro. In America, we use dollars. (except Cuba where dollars are prohibited, there must all use Euro or local currency)
besberry Posted August 25, 2014 #14 Share Posted August 25, 2014 I usually ask them! On cruises out of UK, they often choose sterling, on cruises out of Europe sometimes they'll choose dollars and sometimes Euros. Whatever you give them, they'll be grateful.
