Denim Top in Dining Room

Recommended Posts

I have the cutest wrap-around denim, sleeveless top that is adorable with one of my skirts. Anyway, do you think it would be ok to wear this in the dining room? I've tried several other tops with the skirt, but the denim one looks the best. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'm sure you'll get varying opinions on this, but my vote is no denim of any kind in the dining room.

Will someone please qualify what constitutes "denim"? I mean is denim "looking" tencel which is light, breathable and actually a rayon made from tress "denim"? Is it only blue denim or can I sneak my white denim into the diningroom on a casual night?

I'm disabled and need help changing clothes. I also freeze my butt off in 75 degree temperatures. I try to dress well for all occassions and have gotten several compliments on my formal night attire that I hunt for months for so it will fit, be formal and not get caught in my wheelchair wheels. My idea of semi formal is very nice Tommy Bahama or other silk weave slacks and tops with plenty of sparkly real jewelry. But on days when we spend 8 hours out on the town on an excursion I know my DH wants one and I need a nap. I think we all know the difference between casual and Levis. Denim, believe it or not, is a weave of fabric not a color or a type of clothing. So if someone is wearing a Tencel dress to a casual diningroom dinner you had better know your stuff before making any comments IMHO. It's like when some of us were in the military--never ever dress someone's uniform down unless yours is perfect.

This is one of those topics that always gets beat to death pro and con.

IMO, I would not wear denim of any sort to a cruise ship dining room. When DH and I travel, whether it be a cruise or a week long vacation to Aruba, or elsewhere, we dress for dinner. I think part of what is happening in the dining rooms these days is as a result of the lax in following guidelines. This is ONLY MY OPINION and we all have opinions!!!

I'm simply saying that over time, if people keep slipping this casual outfit and that casual outfit in, then why bother dressing.

Okay, here's a good example. Only about 10 years ago, when you went to the dining room for formal night, 85% of the men wore a tux. Today, I think it's safe to say that 35% wear a tux. Right? My point is that as a couple of gents wore dark suits, other gents saw. And now the dining room (on formal night) is comprised of mostly gents in dark suits.

So things change... and they always will. I'm still happy to see men in a dark suit with a white or light blue shirt and tie....looks very handsome with a tan! Especially on my very handsome blue-eyed SO!

Thanks for all of your opinions. I really do appreciate them. I guess I will have to make up my mind what I want to do. The problem is that I cannot find a top that looks good with this skirt except for the denim one. I will probably take the top and an alternative..if I can find one. I'll judge how people are dressing in the dining room to see if I'll look out of place. Also, if I do wear it, it will be on the last night. I am going on Royal Caribbean and from what I've read on here, this line seems to be more casual than Princess, Celebrity, etc. Thanks!!!!

I guess I just don't have the cruise mentality. (1st cruise NB Alaska in mid-Aug.) Perhaps after some time aboard ship I'll get some mental reorientation, but in the meantime I don't get it. Here goes: I just don't see what the big deal is about denim.

I have a very nice denim skirt that I would think would be nice with a polo shirt and sandals for a casual night. I used to own a really fantastic hand-quilted denim vest. I've seen attractive denim jumpers. I don't doubt that there are good looking denim tops. If any of these items were in khaki no one would be blinking.

Denim is just a particular weight of cotton, usually dyed blue but not always. We're talking regular garments--not denim overalls with straw in the pockets and a seed-company cap. So why the hysteria over wearing denim on a cruise?

That statement couldn't be further from the truth !

Just my 2 cents but I wouldn't wear denim of any kind to dinner on any night of the cruise unless I was eating in the Windjammer cafe. The dining room always calls for smart casual dressing and denim is not smart casual.

There is a thread on the Carnival forum which debates the issue. In the end, not everyone will agree as each of us has our own opinion. People will do what they want until the cruiselines start enforcing their "rules". Have a nice day!

Actually, my cruise lists only one smart casual night and I plan on wearing a very nice pantsuit. I do go by the rules and always dress appropriately. I might just take the top and wear it during the day with shorts. I've lost a good bit of weight and I don't have tons of money to go and buy a completely new wardrobe so I will have to wear some stuff that I already have....that is why I wanted to wear the skirt with the cute denim top. It is adorable and I've only been able to wear it once. I am going to Destin to the outlet mall this weekend so hopefully I can find another top I like there.

You should definitely wear it! You love it and the way it looks with your skirt. You're comfortable in it! It sounds really cute. I would wear it, especially if it meant saving money that could be better spent in one of the ports!

Some times I think the problem with these boards is that it casts doubts in peoples' minds, so then you wind up not being comfortable in something because a few people on these boards told you they would not wear it. Nobody on board the ship is going to be sitting at dinner thinking..."oh my, she's wearing a denim top in the dining room!" And, even if they did, who cares what the "up-tights" think!!! Most likely, people will be thinking..."wow, that's a really cute outfit!"

Wear the top...you'll look beautiful!

Have a great cruise!

I would wear it. It sounds cute and stylish to me. On HAL there is no dress code that says "no denim" in the dining room, only no jeans. I don't know if this is the same on all cruise lines. But a cute denim top is definately different than jeans! Sure, some people would feel uncomfortable wearing it, but if it fits your personality, I say go with it & have fun!
