The tulips are grown in Holland throughout the year, though the fields are generally regarded as being at their most colourful from mid-March to the end of May.

Thank you so much. Do you know what the average temperature would be in April ?

No tulips donot grow all year in The Netherlands.

The best time in general for the fields and also Keukenhof is end of April/beginning of May.

Much depends however how weather in spring is.

This year spring was warm, tulips bloomed about 2 weeks earlier.

But the year before that spring was very cold and tulips bloomed 2 weeks later.

In Keukenhof you will also find tulips in the glasshouse and many are also replanted outside. More about Keukenhof here: http://keukenhof.nl/en/

Thank you for the above information. We are trying to decide whether to book a regular cruise or a river cruise in 2016. Any pros and cons on either would be appreciated.

We have to start or end in Amsterdam, as this is where my maternal heritage is from. Hope to do some ancestry searching while there.

If you want to focus on The Netherlands -- and you're uninterested in doing independent land travel or small group land travel -- you'll see much more if you go on a river cruise.

Viking River Cruises, and Tauck River Cruises both offer a ten-day cruise of Belgium and The Netherlands exclusively. (I image Grand Circle offers a similar itinerary. And there are probably other river cruise operators specific to The Netherlands.) This contrasts with the typical northern Europe ocean-going cruise itinerary which includes a one-day port calls in both The Netherlands and Zeebrugge (for Bruges).

It's pretty easy to get around Europe, so this part of the trip needn't dictate that your cruise should start or end in Amsterdam. You can easily get from Amsterdam to pretty much anywhere that a European river cruise might start, or from the end of a cruise to Amsterdam. So while it would be convenient to start or end in Amsterdam, don't unduly restrict your choice of cruise by a limitation that you don't really need to apply.

We are mulling over the same idea --tulips at Keukenhoff etc and then a Rhine river cruise ending in Switzerland. I have a feeling that while April may be great for tulips it may not be so for the river cruise and exploring the Berne area of Switzerland.

That's a good point about the weather. Thank you everyone rose for your input.
