I'm on QM2; any questions?

Any refurbishment going on , either overnight or during the day ?

I haven't roamed the ship much during the wee hours but so far I haven't noticed any signs of major ongoing refurbishment aside from the normal maintenance you seem like maintaining the lifeboats and painting the ship.

How are the seas the first couple of days?

Very calm to my eye/feel. I did overhear one corridor conversation between passengers who thought there was more movement the first day than they liked but DW hasn’t even out on her sea bands.

I will be on for next Christmas. Please let us know what they do special for the holiday. Have a wonderful trip! Kelly

Hi Underwatr. Has Santa landed on the ship???

Merry Christmas to QM2!

Salacia

Well, the ship is decorated, of course. On Christmas Eve there were activities throughout the day, including carols in the grand lobby (with ‘snowfall’!), gingerbread and cookie decorating for the kids, a reading of a Visit from St. Nicholas with Capt. Oprey, Catholic, Protestant and ecumenical services on Christmas Eve and Day. The in-room movies and those shown in Illuminations have a Christmas theme, such as Polar Express, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Holiday Inn.

Santa will arrive at 11 AM on Christmas Day with presents for the young passengers and the Queen’s Christmas broadcast will be shown in the Golden Lion and on the British channels of the TV. The evening shows tend to include some holiday element – last night’s headline singer included some holiday standards in her repertoire and tonight’s show is a special Christmas show by The Singers & Dancers and the Theatre Orchestra

When you return to your room after Christmas Eve dinner each guest receives a Cunard-themed gift. This year is a Wedgwood coffee mug in a holiday theme; this is more of an informal design than last year’s gift which was similar. There was also a Christmas card signed by Capt. Oprey and other senior officers.

The Entertainment Director is Joanna Haley. She's an acquired taste -- I personally find her public speaking voice grating. Kind of like a little 2-stroke scooter - higher in pitch and inflection at the beginning of every sentence in rapid syllables and then decreasing to a lower pitch and volume. I guess you have to be there. As an American I have to strain to understand her. But she organized a very entertaining Christmas night show in the Royal Court Theatre

Cruise specialists onboard are Hinano Yeo and Petra Staffen.

I might have read about it here but one surprise from previous cruises is the disappearance of the trays from Kings Court. They've also set the plate warmers to 450 degrees so what they might save in cost of retrieving and cleaning the trays the might be losing in paper napkins to make it possible to hold the plates. A hint: there are room-temperature plates over by the dessert / smoked fish section.

Hi U. Very interesting about the cruise director . Paul is my favorite. Hinano

If I am right is nicknamed Yo Yo. Has been on board for a while. I booked through her on board .

No trays in the buffet seems to be the new way of serving. Difficult way to carry food. They can be dangerous in Kings Court!!

Thanks for your accurate report

I'm afraid that Jo Haley gave us a good case of the giggles whenever we saw her - she seems to have taken public speaking from the Disney School of Automatons, as she speaks moves almost exactly like the mannequins in the Hall of the Presidents with a hand...gesture...at the...end...of...every...phrase. Trying hard, though, I suppose, in what is after all a rather odd job.

Power's out.

Just lost ship's power during dinner. The Captain's starting the turbines.

Underwatr, please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I've never been on board when the power went out (thankfully) - do the passengers remain seated while service continues? Or do passengers head back to their cabin?

How dark was the MDR?

Anyway, glad to read that power was restored within 15 minutes!

Regards,

Salacia

Just looked at the ships' webcam. It appears to be down again.

The ships' time is reported correctly as 00:37, but it also states that QM2 is currently docked at St. Lucia.

Wouldn't that mean the ship docked more than 8 hours ahead of schedule??? Not that http://www.cunard.com/cruise-ships/queen-mary-2/

is known for accuracy.

About a quarter of the small lights in the ceiling were emergency lights that stayed on, as did the WiFi and satellite :) (at least after a couple of minutes). Dinner service continued. A tablemate and I happened to have our phones so we used the flashlight mode to help read the dessert menus. It was never darker than a dim restaurant.

A couple of minutes before power was lost you could suddenly see all the lights oscillating in brightness for a few seconds. We had time to joke about it - "Oh, that can't be good... Something's up -- they need me." and after we decided that all was fine the second generator dropped off and (most of) the lights went out.

I noticed that the liquor POS terminals never skipped a beat... ;)
