So how common are these parachute systems in small planes?

Was this an experimental plane or a home built, or regular commercially made small plane?

 

According to the news this plane is popular and purchased because of this parachute.

The news said the plane's parachute has saved a number of people's lives.

Wish they had these parachutes on commercial flights!

Just an awesome job by everyone involved; the pilot of the Cirrus aircraft by being prepared (life vest and life raft), the Coasties out of NAS Barbers Point, Hi (great video capture by the air crewman in the HC-130 Herc), and by the captain and crew of the VEDM, especially the rescue boat crew for a smooth rescue! All those hours drilling paid off here!. Bravo Zulu!

One of the selling points for Cirrus aircraft is the parachute system. Here is a link to an article describing a ferry flight from California to Hawaii in an aircraft similar to the one in the Veendam rescue.

Don't believe everything you read in the news.

Most people buy it because it is fast, efficient, has a modern cockpit and interior.

 

The parachute was installed because so they didn't have to complete a spin testing program which it would have failed.
