Ports of Call

For most ports (& virtually all those in the Caribbean) you just take with you your sailcard (different cruise lines have different names for it) - on most ships it's similar to a credit card-& acts as your boarding pass & on-board charge card & cabin key.

It's scanned every time you get on or off the ship, so that at any given time they can tell who's on the ship & who's not.

So for instance they know who's not back aboard at the end of the day. At that time you occasionally hear loudspeaker messages "will Mr & Mrs Doombrain from cabin 1234 and Miss Notverybright from cabin 4567please contact reception" - means that according to the gangway clicker they're not back on the ship. Possibly cos of a screw-up with the clicker, more likely cos those folk screwed up their timing.

Ship probably won't wait for them, but it's nice to know who you've left behind :D

Yes, when you first board the ship, you will be give a card like a credit card. You will use it as your door key, to charge purchases on the ship and to record every time you get off or on the ship. That way the ship knows at all times exactly who is on and off the ship. It is especially helpful to them when they prepare to sail, as they know if anyone is missing.

I can only speak for Holland America Lines but your stateroom card is scanned every time you embark or disembark the ship. The scan pops your picture on the screen of the Security computer to verify that your stateroom card is not being used by anyone else.

This system ensures that contented passengers don't stowaway to spend another week on board.

First time cruiser.

If we decide to go into port, do they check to see who gets off the ship and then back on?

Yes they do. A security photo will be taken of you and tied to your room key (which is also your on board credit card). They will want to make sure your picture matches when you leave and when you return. So don't have any plastic surgery done while you are in port.

By the way, Ports of Call is in San Pedro, California.

They can also tell who has been naughty and who has been nice.

Mr. and Mrs. Doombrain has reserved cabin 5412 this cruise and Mis Notverybright has reserved cabin 3974 this cruise.

Yes indeed.....you MUST have your ship's key/card to leave the ship, and to get back on. It's your room key, your charge card and your ID for boarding!

They check so that if everyone is onboard early, they will possibly leave port early.
