One Night Pre-Cruise In Southampton

We attempted to book the Premier Inn WC but it is completely booked for our dates. I'm still very happy with the choice of the Mercure Dolphin. Yes, I will return with a quick review on my stay in the end of June. I'll use this thread to keep things simple.

I was emailing someone in transportation in London and he suggested that the Holiday Inn would be close to the docks. I called to check on reservations and was told that they were almost sold out and, as a matter of fact, my first 2 choices were unavailable. So, I made reservations for our entire group. Right or wrong oh knowedgeble ones?

P.S. We are staying at the end of next April.

The HI is close(walking) to one dock,

 

There are 4 docks in Southampton, they are not close together.

 

once you are not walking distance all hotels IN Southampton are close(ish) to the docks, there are some further out depending how you define close.

 

what date and rate(refundable?) are you at, the chances they are filling for next April is unlikely unless it is an event date.

We stayed at HI pre-cruise a couple of years ago, and it was terrible. We ended up with a refund after the letter I sent. The room was shabby, and the staff was unpleasant. When we got to our room DH sat on the bed, and the headboard fell off onto his recently replaced shoulder. When we told the front desk they just told him to put it in the hallway, no concern about possible injuries. The pipes banged so loudly that every time someone in the area of our room ran water or flushed it sounded like a subway train running down the hall. Oddly enough,,the dining room had good food with a very pleasant staff.

We were in Southampton last summer again, and the cab drivers we talked to all said it still isn't good.

Thank you for the information re: Holiday Inn. I have a group of 7 women and my husband and myself. He is disabled. We would like to stay in a reasonably priced hotel for one night prior to our cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette on April 22.

The price we were quoted for the HI was 117 pounds for the one night. I've never been to Great Britain so I have no idea about hotels other than I do need one handicapped room.

After reading several negative reviews of Holiday Inn, we cancelled our reservation there and booked with Novotel Southampton. Orbitz seemed to have the best rates and we paid in USD as opposed to GBP. Make sure your request is stated very clearly that you need an accessible/ADA room so they reserve and allocate that room to you. You may also want to email the hotel directly if you book through a 3rd party site like Orbitz, etc. to ensure that an accessible room is reserved. Good luck.

I'm not sure if they have handicapped rooms, but we were very happy with the Grand Harbour Hotel which is across the street from HI. It was very clean with a helpful staff and a great breakfast. We stayed there last fall, and we're booked for 3 nights in August before our British Isles/TA.

Just to clear up any confusion, Celebrity normally sail out of City Cruise Terminal, and that's the one which H.I. overlooks.

Yes, definitely the closest, right by Dock Gate 8. Front rooms look down Southampton Water, rear rooms look over the ship & terminal, about a 300 yard walk. Popular with cruisers for that reason, but it's quite tired & long overdue a refurb.

Grand Harbour is indeed across the street - but a busy one. Another 200 yards to cross safely at traffic lights, then through H.I.'s carpark. Grand Harbour seems to be getting very good reviews since it was privately purchased from its previous operator De Vere.

Premier Inn West Quay is the same distance as Grand Harbour - a very highly regarded budget hotel & well worth checking prices for next April, see the mention of promo rates for dates next year on this thread.

Pig-in-the-Wall is a boutique hotel set in the city wall behind the Grand Harbour, Ennios is another boutique in a former warehouse, about the same distance but I doubt either has disability rooms.

Other city centre hotels are about a £6 to £8 taxi ride.

John, I know you answered this before, but I can't find the post. We will be wanting to pick up a couple bottles of wine before boarding our Celebrity Cruise in a couple of weeks. I know the West Quay Mall is close, is there a wine store in the mall? Is there one within walking of the cruise port?

The two easiest choices are:

 

Marks & Spencer, in that West Quay Mall.

 

Or Asda in Portland Terrace. Portland Terrace is the road which runs past the main entrance to West Quay Mall and Asda is a five minute walk in the opposite direction to the city wall, through the "tunnel" toward the Civic Centre. Its rear entrance, via an elevator opposite the coach station, is a marginally shorter walk to your ship.

 

Asda is a grocery store, M&S has a grocery department where you'll find their wines. Asda has a wider selection of cheaper & mid-priced wines (at a guess £4 - £12), M&S has mid-priced to better wines (at a guess £7 to £30).

 

Majestic Wines, opposite the station near Novotel, is a specialist wine warehouse with knowledgeable staff, but has a six (mixed) bottle minimum.

Wine also available in a number of convenience stores, but selections will be very limited.

True "wine shops" are further away, for instance in Bedford Place.

ps Just returned from a month-long road trip in the US (yes. very enjoyable, folks - thanks for asking ;)), where wine is cheaper than the UK in stores (eg Walmart), but more expensive than the UK in bars & restaurants. :confused:

So we spent the month drinking Bud Light or Mountain Dew when out, and wine in our motels.
