CATS on OASIS - Time to "Dump" it?

Recommended Posts

The Broadway shows on the Oasis Class ships are performed by first rate performers. It is not the same level as typical cruise ship production shows.

You might need to look up first in the dictionary.

Admittedly, I don't know a lot about Broadway or the other top showplaces around the world, BUT I was there early for Cats and read the little blurbs they put up on the screens about the actors/actresses.

No were did I see Nathan Lane or Audra MacDonald (yeah, I google!) on the ship.

I saw "Chorus member for the Midwest touring production of _____" and "1986 winner of Montana's future child star award!" and "3rd understudy for Juliet in Pawnee, Indiana production of Tiny Sebastian Might Get Us"

Gotta laugh, so no Major League MVP'S or Golden Glove award winners in the line up what a shock!

Everybody can sit down and relax cause the show ain't leaving anytime soon but that doesn't mean it isn't bad or the wrong choice for a ship.

The production may be good it is just not a good show by a lot of peoples standards and taste.

I don't need to look up first rate in the dictionary. Also there are plenty of performers in the US who are first rate performers but who are not going to be in a Broadway production on Broadway.

I have been to plenty of Broadway and Off Broadway shows and found the Oasis class shows, Hairspray, Chicago, and Cats to be comparable in performance to shows I have seen on Broadway. That does not mean I liked all the Oasis Class shows. I didn't like Chicago but the performers were first rate. So there is no requirement that passengers like Cats, Hairspray or Chicago nor is there a requirement passengers attend the shows. Different stokes for different folks.

This is like those kids getting a Participation Trophy.

First-rate is FIRST. Second-rate is SECOND.

At least you're honest

What do Nathan Lane or Audra MacDonald have to do with Cats?

Your analogy only shows that you lack an understanding of the arts. No one is forcing you to go to any of these shows. The casino and bars will be open.

I was on the oasis last month and didn't bother going to see CATS.

I would imagine it is not the fault of the cast themselves - I went to see CATS in Dublin a couple of years ago and if I'd been on a ship that day I'd have left during the intermission.

My other half would be a bigger musical fan than I would be and she said the same; so i'm not at all surprised people aren't bothering with the second half of it on the Oasis when it is so easy to go off and do any number of other things

What do Nathan Lane or Audra MacDonald have to do with Cats?

Nothing, but they do have everything to do with FIRST-RATE talent. I googled who the top performers where in major productions around the world. They were 2 that I actually knew who they were and were mentioned repeatedly as among the top talents in the industry.

I suppose I could've added the amazing Adele (Idina Menzel) Dazeem, as she's a pop culture laugh I'm familiar with.

None of them listed "performed on a cruise ship AFTER they made it big, but before they slid into relative obscurity" as a personal highlight.

Telling me to bug off doesn't make the statement that this is FIRST-RATE talent true. They are way more talented than I am. Many of them are probably amazing human beings. They have a gift.

They are not taking time off from Broadway or London's West End or even Las Vegas to hop on the ship and do this play here.

First-rate = London or Broadway

Second-rate or Third-rate = Vegas, a major city standing production, a touring production

Somewhere else = a ship

My analogy stands. You don't get to bestow the term First-rate on anyone you enjoy seeing like it's some Participation Trophy.

Seeing a show and enjoying it is all relative to you personally. The tiers of the actors are separate from that.

That's nonsense!!!

Just because you don't recognize a popular name in a show means that it's no good or not one with top talent? Cats requires top dancers as well as singers.

Hollywood and Broadway have always had sayings like "Will it play in Peoria" when they are plugging an idea for a script . In other words will middle America appreciate the humor or the subject lines.

You are not going to please everybody , and just because a show wins every award possible is it great, and just because its a critical success means it is going to be a financial success and win any awards.

And having big stars in the cast is no guarantee . As of last week (it may have closed by now ) There is a play on Broadway starring Al Pacino (big name) . People are walking out in droves even before intermission.

There are a lot of great plays and shows I have seen where maybe I didn't "get" the whole point of the story, But still loved the acting and the show in general ..

Hell I still haven't figured out what is the deal with George and Martha's son in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" and never did figure out who Godot is and why those guys are hanging around in that creepy forest waiting for him. *LOL*

My ex wife was famous for watching something and declaring it stupid . It usually meant she didn't understand it :) Ask her did she realize the main character was this and that, and the film is set in such and such time when this was looked down on or illegal . "No" but it was still stupid and /or boring

Well stated!

Otherwise I saw Cats 3 times in London and, yes, the 2nd half really makes it.

I would also go see it on a cruise ship. I can assure you that I had other things to do in London than sit through Cats! There's more to do in London or New York than ANY cruise ship!

The reality is, the cruisers who post here represent a tiny minority of the cruise market. Perhaps 1% or so.

Thus, ultimately RCI is the better judge of whether to to dump "Cats", not the tiny percentage of their cruise passengers posting here.
