Hotel stay after cruise in FLL

Airfare on the day we fly out is very high, and it might be cheaper to just get a hotel for the day we get off our cruise (even with getting a hotel!) and fly out the next day. I am unfamiliar with FLL. Any suggestions on a hotel that has a free shuttle to airport but also in an area where we can walk around have dinner that night and check out the area?

I have found flights that leave the next morning at 6:15am, so would need an early shuttle too.

If you tell us when you are traveling and your approximate budget it will help us make recommendations. The port, airport and 17th street hotels (lots of restaurants, easy access to the sun trolley) are very close to each other so don't tie yourself down to a shuttle; a taxi ride isn't very much.

Start your research with http://www.sunny.org for lodgings, attractions, transportation, etc.

Also check out the sun trolley (http://www.suntrolley.com) for cheap transportation ($1/ride; $3/day pass) to the beach and Las Olas Blvd (http://www.lasolasboulevard.com/) since you'll have an entire day in Fort Lauderdale.

The most highly recommended 'attraction' (and worth all the kudos) is the water taxi (http://www.watertaxi.com) - it's hop on/hop off and you get a tour of the intra-coastal and the new river.

Thank you! We are getting off the ship on April 23, 2016. Staying only one night and hopefully flying out at 6:15 the next morning. I am just concerned about getting to airport early and going to a hotel where there is nothing to do.

You'd need to leave your airport by 4:30am and shuttles don't usually run that early.

I'd book something like the Snooze Inn (http://www.TakeASnooze.com) and just concentrate on taking cabs. They are cheap and plentiful.

I would consider a car rental. You are getting off the ship and have potentially several hours with your luggage before being able to check in. 4 ships in port that day so the hotels will be fairly busy and likely not ready for someone to check in very shortly after they disembark.

Be prepared for sticker shock on hotels though. Not exactly sure what is going on that weekend in the area, but I just checked the big 3 of Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott and prices are higher than what I found for January. I did look at Choice Hotels and found the new Comfort Suites (Sw 19th Crt) at Stirling and I-95 for $135 (the Cambria Suites, which is part of Choice Hotels was double that, and they are just next door). The location is good, near the Oakwood Plaza and easy access up the highway to the airport the next morning. There are other cheaper options within that brand, but they are also much lesser hotels. The Comfort Suites, as I said, is brand new.

It's still peak season for us. All the Europeans don't clear out until late May. For some reason during that time many of our visitors are from the Nordic countries.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, I got my airfare and we are returning the day after we get off the ship. So, I will be looking for a hotel in FLL.

Our flight leaves at 6:15am, so I will need a taxi to get to the airport. Best taxi service in the area? I would assume we will need to get to the airport around 4:30am.

Wondering if a one day car rental would be cheaper?

Doubtful that a rental would be cheaper, but it certainly gives you options for finding a cheaper hotel that might be 15 or 20 minutes away. Plus the ability to go do stuff. And a place to keep your stuff until you are able to actually check in to the hotel that afternoon. If you rent from Alamo or National, they have a shuttle bus right to the airport from the cruise so you can pick up your car, and then next morning, just drop it right back there as they are open 24 hours.

So, I didn't book anything to fancy, just the Sleep inn & Suites in Dania. We are also going to shuttle back to MIA, rent a car and then drop it off early next morning. This way we are not stuck where we are and having to grab a taxi. So our week vacation has turned into a 10 day vacation...haha.

Just out of curiosity what airport are you actually flying out of? I see you are getting off the Glory in Miami correct? Are you planning on going from Port of Miami to Ft. Lauderdale and staying the night and then fly out of Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) or are you flying home from Miami (MIA)?

I'm sort of confused about your plans. If you stay in Ft. Lauderdale and fly home from there a taxi from the Dania hotel is quick and cheap. But if your flight in the morning is out of Miami a taxi is expensive and a 40 minute ride.

Flying out of FLL. We decided to have a rental car, plus our flight is at 6:15am, so we need to get to airport at 4:30, I feel better knowing that we will get to the airport on our terms and not have to worry about a taxi being late or even having to call one at all. Works for us.
