We did not have such a good cabin on our 51 day Rotterdam on one of the lower decks - ocean view. It was midship towards the back and the deck diagram showed a large blank area in the middle of the ship. There was always a hot electrical smell in our corridors which did not enter the cabin, but was always unpleasant when we got to that portion of the hallway.

We additionally had a very smelly carpet and a permanently fogged up window. Not HALS finest. But the cabin itself was large and well laid out - larger on this deck with 5 closets. No complaints there. We had them try to clean the carpet a few times which helped but it always stayed a little musty smelling.

This was several years ago and all cabin repairs and new carpeting may have been installed. However that hot electrical smell may be part of the location of the engines or generators in that section. Not the end of the world but just something to avoid if you have a choice.

They always say look what you have above and below your cabin, but also look what you share in the adjacent hallway too. This was in the C2622-2645 area of cabins on the deck plan. - Main deck.

The outside cabins on Dolphin and Main Decks are larger than the outside cabins on Lower Promenade Deck. However, the cabins on Lower Promenade have quick access to the great outdoors.

If you do choose an outside on Lower Promenade Deck, stay away from the cabins between the mid-ship and aft elevators, as they are under the galley; they can be noisy at night.

One thing we liked about our lower Main deck on the Rotterdam towards the read was access to the more private small aft open decks - my favorite memories were perched on loungers back there by the stairwell looking down at the wake of the ship as we sailed half way around the world.

Take a look at the deck plans and you will see where this is. So going way aft on these lower Rotterdam decks and beyond that "hot electrical smell" blank area in the mid Main deck would be a good choice to have easy access to those aft deck areas. But if your cruise is to Alaska, it is not likely you will be spending much outdoor deck time - best for warm weather cruising with a lot of sea days.

We've been on the Rotterdam 3 times, fourth one coming up next december. I always book a large oceanview, midships on Dolphin deck , cabin numbers in the range 1865-1893 or 1868-1906 and avoiding the ones closest to the elevators . On the deck above are also only cabins and the deck below is where the crew is stationed and part the engine room and storage areas. We never had any smells or noises .

We were assigned Lanai 3365 when we cruised on the Rotterdam. Loved the location, the easy access to the promenade and the assigned deck chairs. We spent a great deal of time out there.

Granted the cabin is slightly cramped as the lanai loses the wall space, there isn't enough room for a fridge (gets really tight) and you have to be sure and close your drapes when it starts getting dark and the lights are on in the cabin.

But the pros outweighed the cons by 2 to 1. That is our own opinion.:D
