winniesbestm8 Posted October 21, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I keep looking at the rates for US dollars with money ready to buy the whole lot in one go. I am not sure really what a good rate is and can anyone recommend where to buy them from? Thanks
cruisebore Posted October 21, 2015 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2015 We quick check on our High st, TA's M&S P.O and any specialists exchange shops. Most indefinably not the airport or on board for that matter. Cb

Cb Agree, Post Office and M&S often good rates with no commission. If you have an M&S card, you get a slightly better rate too.
NauticalMiss Posted October 21, 2015 #4 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Always get ours on M&S card. Slightly better rate, and the transaction is not treated as a cash advance as we always clear the statement when it comes, so no additional charges. Yes - don't know of any other way of 'buying' currency on credit with no fee! (At least until your statement is due if not paid in full!)
rmthames Posted October 21, 2015 #6 Share Posted October 21, 2015 We all ways use Ace-FX.com. Better rates for Dollars & Euros
Fatchemist Posted October 21, 2015 #7 Share Posted October 21, 2015 One note of caution when comparing rates, especially on the high street - many advertise a headline, higher, rate that only applies when exchanging over a certain amount. I felt the way one particular outlet did this almost to the point of being misleading. Obviously it's not an issue if you're changing large amounts but watch out if you're looking at a smaller amount.

I've noticed that too in the Post Office where the headline rates are often for £500 or even £1000.

2irisheyes Posted October 21, 2015 #10 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Locally we use Tesco. I order them online (Tesco Bank - travel money) and collect instore. The rate is almost always better than their instore rate. Although the collection date offered is usually the following day I have usually received a message within an hour or two that the currency is ready. You need to check the online rate via the website not the rate advertised instore. I think Sainsburys online can also be quite competitive. LondonTowner Posted October 21, 2015 #11 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Always get our foreign currency from Thomas Exchange Global. There have various branches in London (where we live) but also do an online service. Have never been able to find a better rate and no minimum amount. We always take some cash and have 2 CCs with no foreign exchange transaction charges.
jeanlyon Posted October 21, 2015 #12 Share Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) We use Cityforex when we travel with Fred. good rates and currency delivered to the ship. What you don't use, you give back and get the same rate in sterling. However, as P&O don't do that, we use Moneycorp https://travelmoney.moneycorp.com/ Edited October 21, 2015 by jeanlyon
shallwe Posted October 21, 2015 #13 Share Posted October 21, 2015 There is a 'Travelmoneymaximiser' on the Moneydsavingexpert.com website. Invariably the cheapest are Debenhams, Asda & Tesco.
Itsbeentoolong Posted October 21, 2015 #14 Share Posted October 21, 2015 I second Thomas Exchange, never find better rates elsewhere. I use the one at Cannon Street, there's always massive queues...says it all
Manilow fan Posted October 21, 2015 #15 Share Posted October 21, 2015 Sainsburys have a money sale on at the moment but I think it finishes tomorrow. You can order on-line to be collected in store or delivered to your home. Dont forget you will need a few Euros as well. Sue

Manilow fan Posted October 21, 2015 #21 Share Posted October 21, 2015 second question if they send larger denominations is there anywhere I can change for 1 dollar bills etc I suppose you can request 1 dollar bills when you place your order especially if you place your order by phone. My local Sainsburys were pretty good and gave me a variety of notes as they keep a fair amount on site anyway.

tartanexile81 Posted October 21, 2015 #23 Share Posted October 21, 2015 We always ask for small denominations when we order our $. Larger notes area nightmare in the Caribbean. I keep an eye on trends and this is the latest advice. The pound continued to lose ground against the dollar today with currency pair falling to its lowest level since 23rd April. GBP/USD slipped to a low of $1.5110 this afternoon meaning the cross has dropped by around 3.3% in the last two weeks.
