Former Celebrity ship Zenith Bad Press

Article doesn't have all its facts straight. The article says

"the island's entire west coast is marked as a marine park, meaning that anchoring is prohibited under most circumstances -- particularly by boats larger than 60 feet and in non-sandy areas."

This is totally ridiculous as they clearly have ships anchored off the west coast on daily, or almost daily, basis during several months each year and regularly at other times of the year as well and these has been going on for decades.

I agree it is a shame this damage was done but it doesn't sound like it was the fault of the ship, the ship's captain nor the cruise line as they were directed to drop anchor there by the port authorities.

The title of the post is accurate but totally and perhaps purposely deceptive. The ship is no longer owned by Celebrity so what relevance does this have to the story? Perhaps the title should have read "American Royal Caribbean Cruises ship Zenith gets Bad Press". Also, why did the OP put it in the Celebrity board as it has nothing at all to do with Celebrity.

A lot of members here have fond memories of the older ships and like to hear follow up bits and updates about them from time to time for nostalgia's sake.

RCI, who owns Celebrity, owns Pullmantur as well. I think the ship was too close to the shoreline -- we love to dive in that area, and it is a great part of the reef. This area is right out in front of Eden Rock Dive Center.

Usually, the ships are anchored 100 -- 200 meters farther out.

Enjoy!

For what its worth...nostalgia too...!!

I worked on Zenith and was on her maiden voyage from the shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, over to USA, setting up the medical center onboard and then cruising... Many fond memories of my time on a beautiful ship.

Sorry, to butt in.....
