Rare Keith1010 Posted December 13, 2015 #1 Share Posted December 13, 2015 Is there anything much in walking distance from the pier (tender drop off) in Belize and is the immediate area safe? Keith
OCruisers Posted December 13, 2015 #2 Share Posted December 13, 2015 The area within the port complex where the tenders drop you off is quite safe. :) LuLu
Rare Keith1010 Posted December 13, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted December 13, 2015 Thanks Lulu. Is there much around there to do. Keith
OCruisers Posted December 13, 2015 #4 Share Posted December 13, 2015 There are some shops and there's the Wet Lizard (bar/restaurant overlooking the water). We either take an excursion through the ship or go to the Wet Lizard. LuLu

Skai Posted December 13, 2015 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2015 (edited) Unless one is simply content to sit at a bar and drink the day away inside the security gates at the tourist village, Belize is a good port to schedule a tour for the day. Belize City(proper) is a 'working town' and there is not much to do or see for visiting tourists there. Additionally, it is not a very safe place to just stroll around on one's own. While the chances of being a victim of crime are generally pretty low during daylight hours, the area(s) immediately outside of the port gates are largely unappealing, even if merely satisfying a curious desire to see 'how the locals live'. However, there are many options for both tours of Belize's interior and to the outlying islands offshore that can provide for a fun day in port. Rare crewsweeper Posted December 14, 2015 #8 Share Posted December 14, 2015 If I may I add to Skai's comments, the area directly around the tourism village is called Fort George and it is the site of many foreign embassies, including the US, the national museum (further up)and some higher end hotels where many US celebrities stay when visiting Belize. Not that you can either get into these places or see celebrities. But as Skai mentioned not a lot to attract tourists. You can walk up a short distance along the tender pier side of the street and cross over the swing bridge into downtown Belize City and still hugging the shore line wander down to the old colonial Governor's Mansion, now a cultural museum, and the historic Anglican Church across from it. You can see the small cannons and an old Yacht in the yard from the tender as you approach the tender pier. There is a decent restaurant, Bird's Isle, closer to the swing bridge. If you turn right out of the tender pier area and walk along the shore line you'll come to the Baron Bliss lighthouse and a nice promenade along the shore and the Smokey Mermaid Restaurant in the Great House, a local inn. But not much else, in the near vicinity. Across from the tender pier is a small crafts/ flea market with local goods at prices much cheaper than inside the tender pier area, and vendors will barter a bit. zqvol Posted December 14, 2015 #10 Share Posted December 14, 2015 Is there anything much in walking distance from the pier (tender drop off) in Belize and is the immediate area safe? Keith There is not much around. The port area is fenced and quite small. The area outside the fence is not the best. Belize is one place that a tour is a must, either independently or through your ship.
