Curr ent CAD exchange rate on new NCL bookings

I personally think that the reason why it's so confusing is because there is NO consistency when it comes to exchange rates at NCL...

We booked about 6 weeks ago and our cabin fare was very close to at par, our exchange rate on NCL.com for OBC and SDP etc... is 19%. I think the rated are very dependent on where the rate originates and how long ago it was negotiated.

I don't think there is a definitive "this is how it works" statement. It's crazy - but I'm OK with it, it's worked well for us this time.

Where did you get a booking 6 weeks ago with the exchange rate at par?

I would thing they would get an enormous quantity of business if they were selling cruises where you could pay the USD price in CAD. :D

I managed that about 4 years ago but not since!!

A Canadian TA that I found online. I still have no idea how it worked and being an analyst, I've tried. Most other online TA's I investigated had better exchange rates than the bank rate, but none came close to where I booked! Not on NCL or several other cruise lines we considered...

Having said that - a few days after we booked, the page with the deals was removed...

I hope that your tickets are safe. That sounds too good to be true. Well done and I hope you weren't!!

It's all booked on NCL.com - complete with the cabin numbers that were specified. The charges have all gone through my CC in CAD by NCL themselves. I suspect it's all related to group rates booked long ago.

My only complaint is that I'm currently limited to buying $4K in OBC.

It definitely depends on the rate you got when you booked your cruise. How long ago did you book this cruise. I'm guessing at least 1 year ago. Please confirm.

We booked a year ago yes but I paid the going rate at the time which I thought was around 1.25 as I recall. But now I'm beginning to wonder myself to be honest.

This is pretty awesome. I just got $200 USD for $222.22.

Questions:

1. How is this actually delivered? When I bought it, it said "certificates" and I selected the first day of the cruise. Does it get added to your account, or do you actually get some certificate you have to take somewhere?

2. We are on a 7-day cruise, which means if we pay with cash for our OBC, we need $300pp. Can we use these pre-purchases toward that? So, if I bought $900 (for 3 of us), can this fund our OBC account, without needing a credit card or more cash? (And if we don't spend it all, wait 4 weeks for it to be mailed back to us, apparently.)

3. Does the $300pp minimum to fund an OBC include kids, or just adults?

4. We have the UDP and UBP, so I'm not thinking we'll spend a whole lot on board. Even with the 3% service charge, we're miles ahead. Is the casino run with actual US cash? I'm thinking we just cash it out in the casino on the last day, rather than wait 4 weeks for the money to arrive.

At $4k in OBC, you could turn over $1k in profit... and pay for your cruise. Sadly, I won't have $4k to tie up.

The first leg of our cruise is three weeks long and we don't have UBP (since we booked under the Black Friday "Pick 2" promo and it was only valid up to 16 days). With the drink prices onboard, our OBC won't last too long...

Just purchased $100 USD OBC for $111.11 CDN. You have to sign into your booking on NCL.com and look under Onboard Credits. This is a great rate as the current exchange is approx $1.45 at TD in Canada.

You'll pay in Canadian dollars now but your OBC will be in USD!

YESSS!!

I bought 400$ OBC for 444, it would cost 580 now

I also pre-paid for excursions in CAD

and also the gratuities

I dont want any USD charges - so as of now, everything is paid for and in CAD.

It is a super great deal

How do you switch to Canadian Dollars? Everything on my account is shown as US Dollars.

If you paid for the deposit in CAD all purchases will be quoted in CAD when you buy. The cost of Shorex, SDP, OBC will show on MyNCL in CAD in that case. If you paid the deposit in USD everything will show in USD and the price also will show in USD.

In Canada it is always best to book with a TA. They can book in $CAD. NCL.com will only price in $USD.

Our PCC with NCL will always give us a price in CAD even though the website will only quote in USD. When we have paid a deposit in CAD all prices quoted for us on MyNCL (shorex, dining, OBC) appear in CAD, the PCC has the ability to over-ride the USD to convert everything to CAD at the rate applicable when we book.

In response to your questions, my reply is as follows:

1. We received a certificate in our room once we boarded which said we had $200.00 in OBC which we purchased ourselves. Do nothing with this certificate, it will show up as a credit on your onboard account. However, I had purchased additional sums of money at 3 other times prior to sailing and these certificates/nor amounts were recorded on my OBC account. I then went to Guest Services and produced my "Amenity Invoice" which showed my additional purchases of OBC (which were substantially more), and after contacting head office the next day, the charges were posted to my OBC account (which can be viewed on your tv in your stateroom).

2. You will still need a CC to check in onboard just in case your exceed your OBC which you have pre-purchased. If possible, I would buy more OBC, if allowed. At the time of our cruise, there was no limit, but I understand that may have since changed. I would cash out at the casino, prior to leaving the ship and pay the 3% convenience fee, as some people are reporting a wait in excess of 4 weeks to get their refund from NCL.

3. Not sure on the answer to this question.

4. Yes, the casino is run with actual "US cash". Cash out on the last night of your cruise, or sooner!!

question for you all

let's say I buy a large quantity of credit as I am planning on buying a diamond (5k for example) at 1.11 - it would cost me 5555,

If I don't buy anything, would I then get reimbursed the 5k USD (which would then be 6750 CAD

Is this how it would work?

At present, yes. But you may not be able to buy all that at one go. Especially if it is just you.

I purchased a large amount of obc in December at 1.11 as I was told by ncl rep

I could purchase future cruise in full on board with this obc. The day before my cruise they refunded all but 1000.00 back to my CC. The accounts dept called me and advised that 1000. was the obc limit. I had made purchases over the ncl sight as well as direct with ncl rep over a two week period.

Thanks Mike - I am travelling with my hubby and 2 kids.

It is our 10 year anniversary, and I am eyeing a nice stone, and would love to buy it at 11% exchange rather than 35% exchange - but I am just worried if I choose not to buy anything what would happen to all the credit we pre-purchased.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me approximately what exchange rate NCL is currently using on booking in Canadian funds? I've never sailed NCL before, and haven't been able to figure out how to see the price in CAD through their website. I don't want to call or email, because in the past I've gotten a lot of "spam" calls/emails from the rep. Thanks!

On Monday I booked my cruise on the Getaway. I went through my Canadian travel agent. The rate I got was 1.28. I would say that is pretty good considering the actual exchange rate is 1.42 right now.

Saving on the exchange rate plus the free beverage packages they are offering right now seemed like a great deal and I could not pass up!
