One Ship Once A Month Smokefree

OK, then let's do a once a month cruise that bans all the obese people or one that bans kids, or one that bans old people...etc, etc

A non realistic post. Second hand smoke has been proven to be dangerous to other people's health, all the things you mention does nothing to affect the health of others. How people can continually argue for a habit that ruins their health as well as the health of others is beyond my comprehension. And,yes, I'm an ex-smoker and I have watched the devestation in my own family this habit inflicts. Arguing for the right to hurt others peoples health as well as your own makes no sense.

Smoking kills 550,000 people a year in the USA

Pain Pills/ Opiods (heroin)/ other drugs kill 30,000 people a yr in the USA

Alcohol kills 55,000 people a year in the USA

Now what is the most deadly addiction in America? It's smoking, #'s don't lie.

Carnival: expand the use of the smoke eaters/ air cleaning machines, it's a good start.

I will say that I am severely sensitive to any smoke, so much so I cant even BBQ because it feels like my throat is closing up. But to say there arent many places to go on a ship as large as even the smallest ship is ridiculous. I dont smoke period but I can't nor wouldnt deprive others from their vices whether its dangerous or not. People are adults and can make their own decisions. To say smoking isnt a "need or right", well neither is overeating, but yet I see some hefty people piling high plates at the buffets on board (and on land for that matter) all the time. But once again people are adults and can make their own decisions. It is not my job to police another human being who has chosen another path to my own. Plus I cant stand when people try to police another person.

I cruise with my small children all the time and there are MANY places to go without encountering smoke, especially open decks which is the best part of cruising, smell the fresh sea air! Kids these days spend too much time indoors watching TV, playing video games, online, etc on a regular basis. Why would you want to be cooped up indoors on a cruise anyway?

I understand why Carnival won't ban smoking in the casino. The revenue from people who sit and smoke obviously exceeds the lost of revenue from those who choose not to gamble because of the smoke.

What I don't understand is why some smokers are so defensive instead of compassionate. On some ships, like the Sunshine, walking through the casino can hardly be avoided without great hassle if someone wants to walk the length of the ship indoors, go to several major activity venues, or check in for Your Time Dining. Some people are allergic to cigarette smoke and others have asthma and other medical conditions that are negatively affected by cigarette smoke. It's not like the fat from my bacon floats down into your lungs. My son and I will hold our breath, grimace, and walk quickly past you as you voluntarily puff out poison. I'm sorry if I am a member of the smoking police. :)

A non-smoker's view here.

I am with the smoker who says, "it is none of your concern what I do with my body".

I am with the non-smoker who says, "I should not be forced to breath your smoke in a public place".

I wish the free market could decide such things. For example, if restaurants decide they are losing too much money by allowing smoking, they could decide to ban it. If they decide they are losing too much money by banning it, they could allow it. But then there are those pesky little things called lawsuits. That is what really drives policy.

In the mean time, I am mostly with the rules that are in place. Follow them and all is fine. Don't like the rules? Don't go.

As to this silly discussion: What is so draconian about floating the idea of a smoke free cruise? Or an all smoker's cruise?

We get so worked up about hypotheticals. Personally, I doubt this will be a debate for much longer. Allowing smoking in public places is trending downward. For the record, I am libertarian in my views about such policies. I do not see such micromanaging as a good thing. Such tinkering leads to policies that curb how big a sugary drink is legal.

They do say BBQ's are just as bad for you as cigarettes.

As for the opinion from the UK well let's just say your from the UK not USA.

If you don't like it don't go to the casinos or travel with a different cruise line that prohibits smoking in all indoor areas.

Thank you for your insightful comment about where I am from. Actually no need to say that I am from the UK as I had already said it!

Furthermore, thank you for your helpful, suggestion that if I don't like I shouldn't go to the casino! From someone from the land of the free that kind of goes against the principle of freedom of choice.

In the USA, smokers are used to waiting until they go outside to light up. In most states, restaurants, bars, workplaces and commercial establishments are all smoke free. Smokers get their "smoke break" to go light up. Smoking is the one vise that directly affects other people.

I really don't think any bar or casino revenue would be lost if the ships were all non smoking inside. Smokers would go out on deck to smoke, just like on land.

The last Carnival cruise we took allowed smoking in the casino which was in the middle if deck 5. You had to walk through the cloud to get to get to the other end of the ship.

I think it's time, for everyone's health, that all cruise lines calling on US ports have a non smoking policy like all other business in the US.

This is so false, Smoking is allowed in bars and casinos in las vegas, and also in casinos in New Jersey, as well as Pennsylvainia. Last time I checked all of these places were in the USA.

Yes, so far the casino lobby has prevailed in protecting the revenue they believe they will lose if smoking is prohibited, in light of the stereotype of the smoking/gambling addict without self-control and the casino's desire for nothing to motivate a gambler to take even a quick break. So yes, smokers win in casinos because casinos are betting on them losing a lot. :(

Personally, I prefer high-fat food and suntans as my vices.

You choose to go to the casino it's your choice. All I am saying is if you don't like it don't go or find another cruise line the endless complaining is pointless if Carnival sees there profits decline because of it they will change there policy. Have a nice day!

I guess I should add that I am just off the Breeze and that since my last cruise on her in May of 2015 they have added smoking areas in the casino, you used to only be able to smoke at the casino bar and machines and tables marked smoking, the seating area near the bar was off limits. That seating area is now entirely smoking. I guess after seeing that it remained completely empty most of the time on our 2 previous breeze cruises they decided to open it up for smokers. It was a very nice place to sit and enjoy a drink and meet other smokers and smoker friendly people!

Cruise Critic has a story out now on the most friendly cruise line for smokers - and it's Holland America!

HAL is having a great sale now too. Smokers can cruise for a bargain fare and not be hassled. You are free to smoke in most public areas, even on your balcony! You can vap in your cabin!

I do like the casino so I choose to go in there. What I don't like is that there is nowhere in there that is smoke free. I cannot get to the cashier without going through the smoking zone and I cannot go into the supposedly smoke free zones because of the selfish attitude of smokers sitting at machines in those areas completely disregarding the signs not to smoke there.

The endless complaining maybe pointless to you, but if no one stands up for their rights or complains when things are wrong, nothing will change. I am not expecting Carnival to completely ban smoking in casinos, but do expect that the areas which are designated no smoking to be just that, as well as common sense planning in putting the cashier areas away from the smoking areas so that they are accessible to all.

Have a nice day.

I wouldn't say selfish. To be honest, on the ships I have been on, I think CCL could do a much better job with the signage. I don't smoke, but I honestly could not tell you the machines I sat down at if they were smoking or non-smoking.

The ones with the no smoking signs on are the ones that you can't smoke at! It is a red circle with a cigarette in the middle and a diagonal red stripe across it.

More endless, pointless complaining. If you have complained to carnival about this they obviously don't care if you like it or not take your business elsewhere and maybe they will I'm betting not. Since other cruise lines have gone smoke free indoors smokers have flocked to Carnival. That keeps revenues up so it's not likely to change. And I am a firm believer that rules must be obeyed so if someone is smoking at a smoke free machine management should do something about it even though smoking machines are usually located within a few feet.

No it isn't. I just sailed HAL and smoked on the balcony. Price was lower than Carnival. One side of adult pool, outside on one of the lower decks. Casino had area for smoking. Not in shops etc or auditoriums.
