Come-on...Whos skipping the muster drills???.....

Again... for all of you would be lecturers, the OP asked what happens if... not please tell me all the obvious reasons to go.

Why is it your business to judge, comment and lecture on a behavior that in NO way effects you? If someone chooses to skip a drill and suffers consequences no matter how likely or unlikely that may be, it is still not your problem.

Consider taking the energy and doing something productive like counting underdressed people on formal night or timing chair usage near the pool.

Actually, on some lines it does effect me because they do cabin roll calls and when no one from a particular cabin shows up I have to sit my happy butt out in the sun for longer than necessary.

And for the gentleman I saw on a DCL cruised who passed out in the heat of being out on the deck in a life jacket for longer than normal because SEVERAL cabins decided to just blow off the muster, yeah, it was his problem.

I don't see what the big deal is...is it my favorite part of the cruise? Heck no. Just go, get it over with, and then enjoy your cruise.

As much of a pain the the a$$ the muster drill is I believe that everyone should attend. I work in a hospital and we all dislike having to do the fire training every year however one never knows when they may need it.

It's funny how you think you remember what to do in an emergency but every year there is something retaught that I had forgotten.

What's 30 minutes of your cruise to ensure your safety and the safety of others??

When you encounter people on these boards that are personally confrontational, the best thing to do is ignore them.

Nothing wrong with stating a strong opinion. But when it gets into a personal put-down, that should tell you something about that individual and the best thing you can do is let it go. They'll move on and pick on someone else; trust me on that.

That said, I think there are a few things that one should do on a cruise for the benefit of all that share your vacation. Other than a few things like the dress code and the muster drill, you have the freedom to shape your cruise vacation. The muster drill doesn't take very long. Why not just attend and be done with it?

Happy cruising.

One additional comment. In 20 cruises, I have seen several minor injuries and one concussion and a broken leg caused by passengers that take their life jackets off right after the drill and then fall down the stairs because they tripped on the dragging straps.

Some cruise lines warn passengers about this, but most don't mention it. It's a really good safety tip to go back to your stateroom and THEN take the life vest off.

Well put WillB, and for the record I agree that it is a minor thing that people SHOULD do, however it is personal choice, laws rules and codes can not force behavior they only seek to shape it.

As to some lines doing a roll call... Princess isn't one of them, this board is specific to Princess so I replied accordingly.

vince_g hits the nail on the head. The law/rules apply to other folks. It's a sad commentary on our society that we are losing respect for authority, which is the basis for many of our problems.

Well said Willb. I think the people who are skipping the muster drill are out at the pool with their toddler(s). This whole post has turned ugly!!!

hate to through a sad note into this, but it does apply.

I am sure that every patron who entered that nightclub in Rhode Island were confident they would be able to leave if a fire broke out.....

considering that a cruise ship is much larger and has more complicated floorplan than a nightclub, it only makes sense that you ought to have a "practice" run....

I have stated my position, asked people to refrain from inflamatory rhetoric and language and NOT attempted to enforce my opinion on others.

I find that trying to get others to do as I like or believe is a fruitless exercise unless they agree and wish to do so.

God bless and happy sailing.

"wonder what they would say to you, if you stayed in the pool?" was the first question and I only have one answer:
"get off the ship!""Now and without changing"
Did not need an IQ of 140 to come up with that.

Let's see who the first person is to panic if he/she missed the drill and something happened.

My family's safety is paramount - which means I wouldn't want some person who decided to skip the drill running into us lost as we proceed to the proper station in the case of a evacuation.

I wonder who the first person would be pushing their way onto a lifeboat? Hmmm...

There are morons everywhere, even ones with high IQ's. It's been my experience that those with high IQ's often have a lower level of common sense. I know a guy who is a genius by IQ standards but continually gets taken by scams.

When the boiler blew up on the Norway, we were called to muster stations. Since we were in the International Room on the same deck as the buffet, several people left to get breakfast while the fire fighters worked on below.

At least they wore their life jackets while carrying their breakfast trays back to the muster station. Sure don't want to miss that last meal.

13 cruises so far - RCCL, Carnival, Celebrity, Princess, NCL, HAL (we were on the last cruise of the wonderful Norway, still have my room key)

Final, Final, Final word on the topic.

The word "stupid" was used by someone who has long since gotten over this as have I with him.

Stupid is "Marked by a lack of intelligence" according to the dictionary.

I.Q. is a widely accepted measurement of intelligence and can in fact disclose a lack thereof.

Anecdotal evidence about some vague high I.Q. person never named being lacking in common sense does not an intelligence argument make.

If the offending phrase had been "people who don't go to muster drills lack common sense, it might apply.

So... once again all you who feel duty bound to berate someone who has repeatedly told you he won't be lectured by people for stating an opinion that the OP asked for,

God Bless and Happy Sailing

I actually love to go to the Mustard Drill. My favorite part is when they read aloud the names of the missing passengers and the group who showed up takes a pact with the crew to toss those missing souls into the frozen, black, undending sea in the event of an emergency.

While I'm normally loathe to correct people with high IQ's, I would like to remind the previous poster that the term "stupid" isn't limited to a description of one's intelligence, but may also be used to describe one who makes a careless exercise of judgment.

Eh eh! Guiltry as charged. I skipped the drill on my second cruise. First of all, we embarked kind of late but we were planning to avoid it anyway. Not that my husband and I are unconscious... we both have a good memory. Although on my first cruise, I noticed the stewards are checking every room and sending people off ;o). Although, we were dutifully reminded that a muster drill would be held for those late passengers the day after at 11 am.

If memory serves me correctly, you are asked not to wear your life jackets to the muster on Princess. They demonstrate later how to put them on and secure them.

Well for all you who keep maintaining that people who miss the muster drill are more likely to " panic and endanger others" all I have to say is baloney.
During a true emergency the real problem will be all the DRUNKS. By drunks I mean anyone with more than 3 drinks in them( which will cover many people) since after 3 drinks almost anyone would be considered legally impaired, meaning their judgement would be impaired. In fact most people would be legally impaired after even two drinks!!

So... I say no drinking on board so that we all have a clear mind and are ready to respond to any emergency in a timely and efficent manner!!

Seriously if the drills are to be truly any use at all they should be done several times, as, it has been pointed out practice is what makes a person most likely to follow safety procedures correctly when in a crisis.

So there, no drinking and drills at least once a day, sounds fun eh?
