The OP didn't ask why.. or if legal or for any well intentioned advice, they asked what if... some of us answered that. What if... not much.

On another note-
On the TP last August there was a young Austrailian couple in the cabin next to ours. Approx. 1/2-an hour before the drill, we found them in the hallway near the stairs, in thier life vests, looking totally confused. They asked us where to go for the drill "This is our first cruise and we don't want to miss anything". We told them to wait for the signal and then they would find out where to go.

Just thought I'd add this to lighten it up a bit.

So if I understand you correctly, the smart thing to do is to ignore the muster drill, confident that we can find our way to the proper place because if a fire broke out in our homes we could find a window to jump out of?

Is that just for people with big IQ numbers and the rest of us should go to the drill?

If I follow your lead, what if, unbeknown to me, two decks down there was a raging fire blocking the path that I felt confident that I "could find my way" on and the crew was just short of that area re-directing the passengers to safety? Then should I pay attention to the safety information?

Tell me again why it's a good idea to ignore the safety drill?

I guess you can call me stupid for following orders of the Coast Guard.

I also follow the directions of police officers, firemen, those guys that wave you into the next parking space in lots sometimes, and my doctor.

Is that foolish of me?

.. well they are!

I work several windows all day and each one has its own "flavor" The Carnival board IS more direct and deals with many more first-time cruisers.

There's not a whole lot that can be said to justify breaking international law, blatantly ignoring safety measures put in place for our direct benefit or trying to transfer focus from the issue to the messenger because you have no substance to your argument.

I like that, I think that will be my official response to this absurd patter.

We will need to hold elections for the office of "Stupid Definer"... prior to allowing it's powers to be used.

Your comment was offensive, despite your obviously heartfelt position. People can state opinions without ad hominum arguments which are the weakest by far.

Good idea

I don't see either one of us contributing anything of value to the board via this thread. It's taking up time I could be spending answering other posts in detail or researching topics so I can or learning from the posts of others.

This thread is starting to sound a bit like swim diapers, chair hogs, seat savers, smokers, formal night attire, jeans in the dining room, smuggled alcohol, etc.

quote:
People who do not go to the lifeboat drills are stupid.

Chris - this is why I like you! And you made an important point - unless you're on the same ship with the same cabin every time, things are different. And, procedures change - if you don't go to the drill how will you know? Finally, not only is it for one's own safety, but for the safety of the rest of those on board. You think the Muster Guides aren't looking at the make up of their Muster Stations to determine what a possible emergency will involve?

I find it incredulous that people would put their safety and the safety of others in question for 20 extra minutes in the pool. How selfish can you be?

quote:
This is all so strange b/c on Carnival it is presented as mandatory.

It is mandatory - it is maritime law that everyone be exercised within 24 hours of the ship sailing. Theoretically, if a cruise line wanted to push it, igorning maritime law could be considered a breach of your cruise contract and you could be off the ship before it even left the pier.

quote:
So it's OK to call people stupid on that board?

You've obviously not been around very long...happens all the time.

quote:
Tell me again why it's a good idea to ignore the safety drill?

I'm with you again Chris...people posting here purporting to be smart and indicating they ignore safety drills. That's smart?

quote:
You have consistanly ignored the OP who specifically asked NOT to be lectured.

I question the original posters intent. Why would she ask such a stupid question and expect not to be lectured? Doing so is a stupid act in itself...and kind of explains why she might not be going to the muster drill, doesn't it?

Sorry folks - I know enough crew members and have heard enough horror stories that I agree it is stupid and irresponsible not to go to the safety drills. I have friends who have personal experience being mustered and you'd be surprise the number of supposedly experienced, smart people who, when faced with an emergency don't act so experienced or smart. Add to that the fact that most passengers have had a few drinks and you've got a mess. The real shame of it all is that it's not necessarily the people that don't go who are affected...it can be your fellow passenger.

I stand by my original thought - people who don't go to muster drills and ignore safety instructions are stupid - and if you possess a high IQ and you're doing so, your intelligence should bring you to a better conclusion. You should all know better. And just so you can stay out by the pool for an extra 20 minutes?

Now let me give you some warnings about skin cancer and what that extra 20 minutes is doing to you.

I feel asleep during ours, put my head on my husbands shoulder and zonked right out. It was the day after our wedding and we had been on an early morning flight from Buffalo.

Well, I do not try to force anyone to do what I believe in, so Ill just say this, we attend the Muster Drills because we are asked to, just as we dress appropriately for formal nights. I do however feel if you do not wish to attend, thats your right, and if you choose not to dress up for the formal night, then eat somewhere besides the dining room.

Bottom line is there are people who just don't believe the law applies to them, whether it's attending muster drills or stopping for red lights. Unfortunately there is nothing anyone can do or say that will make them change.

If muster drills are required, then roll call should be taken at the drill. If people want to skip out on the one responsibility of the entire trip, they should be called on the carpet for it.

Working in a school, I can't count how many fire drills, tornado drills, or bomb threat drills we do in a year's time. They are used so students not only know the proceedure, but also it is a proven fact that the more practice a person has, the less chance of panic there is. In an emergency, that is crucial.
Just for the record, intellegence and common sense often don't go hand in hand.
