A review of our British Isles cruise

Recommended Posts

We had a wonderful time on our British Isles cruise. We did most of the tours ourselves and I wrote a review on my family blog. Feel free to take a look if you want any ideas of what to do in the ports.

Thanks nursemom, loved the pictures. We're doing a cruise out of Southampton early June 2014, not just the British Isles but also Normandy, Bruges and Amsterdam. You say you went in spring, but when exactly was it? We want to do a 5-6 day land tour in Ireland either pre or post cruise, preferably the latter, as I'm thinking June 3rd week might be better weather wise. Your thoughts?:)

Our spring cruises are usually back to back transatlantic and then the British isles.... They start mid April and end mid may... Weather is always cool... Perfect for us floridians! Late June will be much warmer I think...

Guess you can never predict what the weather will be like, especially in the British Isles! Some years back we were in Edinburgh early July and it was freezing, we were all bundled up in jackets:D

We'll be doing our first Princess and British Isles cruise the end of Aug. Needless to say I've been doing a lot of research. We're flying into Heathrow a few days early & staying at the Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo hotel. At the moment we're trying to decide the best mode of transportation for us from Heathrow to the hotel, and from the hotel to Southampton to the cruise port. Any advice or suggestions you can give us would be greatly appreciated.

I have used 4 times, http://www.justairports.com a car service from LHR to our London hotel and London hotel to LHR. Price is based on hotel's postal code. It was nice to be met at baggage area and driven direct to our hotel.

I have used National Express coach http://www.nationalexpress.com from Victoria Coach station to Southampton Coach Station then a taxi (about £10) to the port.

I took the train from Southampton (taxi from port to trains station - about £10) to Waterloo train station.

You might be interest in using International Friends http://www.internationalfriends.co.uk from London to Southampton or Southampton to LHR or London hotel. They only go on cruise embarkment and disembarkment days. If your hotel is not listed, email them and ask for the closest hotel pickup. They have a direct coach to Southampton or a coach with a stop along the way to Southampton. I used them post cruise.

The Royal staterooms at Buckingham Palace http://www.royalcollection.co.uk are open to the public during August, highly recommend. We did the Royal Day Out, The Queens gallery, The Mews, Buckingham Palace (all within walking distance of each other).

Another recommendation, is the Edinburgh Tattoo.

The London Eye gives you a great view on London.

August, 2014.

We used Blackberry Cars to pick us up at Heathrow and take us to our London hotel. Our flight was early, arriving before 7:00 am, and our guide was already there, most efficient and kind, very clean car.

London pre-cruise. Purchased tickets in advance to see the Buckingham Palace staterooms. Would definitely do again. Excellent.

We took International Friends tour bus, which picked us up at our hotel, to Stonehenge on the way to Southampton. Highly recommend that as well. Driver was a bit early and actually came into the hotel lobby to get us and our luggage. Also tickets in advance.

Great cruise.
