gwesq Posted August 14, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2016 What can we expect with regard to leaf colors, weather (assuming a hurricane doesn't show up)? Stops where we'd want to see flora & fauna are in Baie-COmeay, Gaspe & Bar Harbor.
SailBadtheSinner Posted August 14, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2016 When is your cruise? For Bar Harbor, peak foliage time would be around Columbus Day. Further past that it is past peak. Can't answer for Canadian ports of call. Have you tried the search function on this forum? SBtS
1025cruise Posted August 14, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Its hard to say on foliage this year. With the weather we've been having, they are saying foliage might not be as it usually is, and may be even earlier.
gwesq Posted August 14, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Cruise would leave Quebec Oct 18. Has weather up north been warmer than usual? Wouldn't that result in later than normal colors? I guess it is impossible to know for sure, but just looking for probabililties. And wondering if the colors can be seen while cruising, or whether land excursions are necessary in Gaspe & Baie-Comeay?
1025cruise Posted August 14, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Its been HOT and DRY. A lot of the region is in drought conditions. Due to this, they are saying foliage may not be as spectacular this year. Also due to the dryness, leaves may start falling earlier.
Jolie_Cruiser Posted August 14, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 14, 2016 I agree with the previous poster. That is what I heard for Québec also. I have never cruised in the fall, so I cannot say if the colours are visible from the shore near Gaspé and Baie-Comeau. Here is a good post from last year with informative links. They haven't posted the colour map for Québec yet but they will eventually. maryann ns Posted August 15, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) The third week in October would normally be great for Cape Breton (Sydney is the port) but with the drought the trees are stressed and they may turn colour earlier. You will just have to wait and see. You did pick a good date for a normal year. Edited August 15, 2016 by maryann ns
gwesq Posted August 15, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted August 15, 2016 Thanks for info. We don't stop in SYdney. We go straight to Bar Harbor from Gaspe. I guess it's just a crap shoot.
IWantToLiveOverTheSea Posted August 27, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Once your cruise rolls around, call the Maine foliage line on 888-624-6345 or go to http://www.maine.gov/doc/foliage

I've checked your itinerary against the interactive fall foliage map at the Yankee Magazine web site. The cruise ship arrives in Bar Harbor on 10/22. Unfortunately the map show that you will be visiting BH and as well as Boston at past peak, YMMV. SBtS
