Thanks sunnyv and laginog for the info! Just put in a $50 3* bid for 11/12. Didn't work. Will try again, as $50-55 seems to be the going rate. I may be trying too far out though.

Since u live that close to the piear I was wondering if u knew if the was a UPS at the Airport thank you ron
quote:
Originally posted by afsan01:
There are quite a few hotels right near the pier, almost all of them are nice, especially if you are only going to stay one night. If cost is not a concern, you might want to consider Embassy Suites. You will want to look for hotels along 17th Street Causway if you want to be really close to the pier.

If you want any particulars about certain hotels or the area, just let me know. I live only 2.5 miles from the pier, so, obvioulsy, I'm pretty familiar with the area.

Ronl: When you say "UPS," are you talking about a place that ships packages? If so, there is a Post Office right next to the airport. Further, there is a UPS Store on 17th Street Causway (next to the Walgreens).

Pete or Tina;

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Beach 2 days post cruise in August after our CP cruise. Can we just catch the Water Taxi from the Pier to go to our hotel since its located near a water taxi stop? (we'll just buy a $5 all day pass).

You will like the Renaissance. Ask for a room high up facing the pier and you will be able to see the ships. The restaurant in the lobby has some early bird specials but is expensive later. There's a nice seafood restaurant next door and I believe another one in the shopping center. They have an internet lounge off the lobby which is free to use.
A taxi ride to the pier was $6.75 plus tip when we were there in January.

Lisa.
The water taxi does not go to the port. It does not cross under the 17th street bridge for security reasons, etc.......you can go to the best western marina hotel or to the hyatt pier 66 to catch. If thats the case just take the cab to the hotel and use water taxi getting around once settled in..

Pete;

Thanks for the info. How much would a cab be for a 6 mile ride? I know you mentioned that a limo was $8/pp, but since we have 6 in our family, $48 seems pricey for that relatively short distance.

Or any other suggestions for travel from the pier to the hotel , or later from the hotel to the airport? (also about a 6 mile distance, I waas told).

No, Ft. Lauderdale does not have the Super Shuttle. Here is their web site:

We are planning to fly into Orlando for 3 days, rent a car for a drive to FLL for another 3 before leaving on a cruise to Panama. With all the great information posted here, I am very confused. Some postings say yes to downtown others say no. Please give me your opinion, (no one will be right or wrong, jsut different) on pros/cons for the two areas. I will try priceline closer to my trip but need help where to try. Thanks.

until we sail away....Panama Canal

Depends on what you want to do the 3 days you are in FLL. The "downtown" area is the pier area. There is a Budget car rental next door to the Renaissance which is at the Quay on 17th Street in the downtown area. If you want to do the beaches, select the beach area.

Lisa,
My family and I are planning to rent a car and drive down the Florida Keys. Other than the beach and water taxis, etc, I'm not sure what else do to with the 'clan'

Blessings,
Todd

Julia & David,
There was a strip-mall with several shops including a dollar store with several good buys on some goodies within easy walking distance. Also, across the street from the mall was K-mart I believe (if their still in business) which was nice for some forgotten items as well as stocking up on Pepsi to bring aboard. On the same side of the street as K-mart was a very good little 50's style diner with great frys. We intend to hop the shuttle to the airport the morning after arriving to rent a car as we will be arriving two days prior to boarding the ship. Last time we where there, we didn't have much time to explore, so I'm sorry to say I can't share more.
Have FUN...!!!

Blessings,
Todd

Cruzgal 11, we stayed at the Bahia Mar and while it was nice and clean, it was expensive for just a plain room. The restaurant was outrageously expensive for breakfast, but there is a deli nearby. We had a beach-view room and were disappointed that you can't sit on the balconies. There is just enough room to stand out there and watch the ships come in. It was nice, but we won't stay there for our pre-cruise night again and will try someplace different next February.
