Texting while onboard

Recommended Posts

How about iMessage? Thank you

iMessage should work, as long as all parties texting have iPhones using iMessage. The best thing to do is to put your phone in airplane mode at home, turn on the wifi, and test it out. If it works on airplane mode with wifi at home, it should also work onboard the ship in wifi as well.

iMessage will use only wifi (not your cellular data) if you are connected to wifi and have your cellular data turned off (in airplane mode). If you are not on wifi and you have cellular data on, then it will use your data. Therefore, just make sure you have airplane mode turned on so you don't get unexpected international roaming charges.

You can also text using Skype and many other apps. You can video chat on the ship's wifi too using Skype, FaceTime (on Apple products), and many other apps.

In conjunction with this, see if your carrier/device supports WiFI calling, then all calling/texting will be integrated and easier.

A single device VOOM package can be shared across as many devices as needed.

But only on one device at a time. So if you are texting between two on board then you need the two device option.

We were on the Allure in November and texted via iMessage on and off board. Sometimes it came up blue and sometimes green, but it worked. Keep in mind you can get dropped from the WiFi periodically so you sort of have to check once in awhile to make sure you are still logged in.

We were texting, Facetime, and sending photos/videos via WiFi just like at home.

While preferable, you don't "need" the two-device option. In another thread, a poster explained today how he and his wife would work it using the one-device package. Not a very convenient system, but a lot less expensive.
