Question about Cheers and switching rooms with onboard accounts

Convoluted question, but I assume someone here has experience

I know this is a somewhat common thing, but have no clue how it really works in regard to S&S accounts:

DW and I are booked in a few weeks with another couple. His wife and I drink plenty, but DW and he do not at all. I've heard of folks switching cabins for check in and to buy the package as a workaround to the "every adult in the cabin must buy it". (It was actually suggested to me by a PVP, but he couldn't explain it to my level of satisfaction).

I can understand that She and I would share a cabin and DW and Him would, but after His wife and I buy Cheers, wouldn't our S&S accounts have to both be in the same cabin. Is it as simple as going to guest services after the fact and switching rooms?

Disclaimer am NOT talking about "sharing amongst four people" (as I'm sure some will believe). DW is a teetotaler and He is a recovering alcoholic who hasn't touched a drop in just over four years.

TIA for any viable responses

We just did same thing last month on the Glory! Just go to guest services and get room key! It will be no problem!!

Thank You ma'am. Maybe I'm just being obtuse, but how would we have Her charges not charged to my account though and DW's not being charged to his?

Link each individual to a specific card (can do on online check in) and do not allow charging rights to the other person in the cabin (each person charges go to specific card like you would do with friends in same cabin). Then go guest services and get a cabin key (this will only be used for cabin entry). You will have to carry 2 cards.

First off are you already booked to the same cabin as your "drinking friend", if not your plan will not work quite the way you think it will. Cheers regardless if purchased at the pre-boarding discount or purchased once on board at the full price is based on the names on the booking for that cabin. The ship can not change the booking contract which is how names are linked prompting whom has to be part of the Cheers purchase.

What the guest services desk on board is doing is issuing extra keys between those 2 cabins. They are then turning a blind eye to the sleeping arrangements as long as it does not violate any maritime laws or USCG regulations.

S&S folios/cards are per person not per cabin. Normally when spouses or significant others share a cabin their on board finances can be very easily combined into a master account, by a simple single keystroke as part of the online check-in process. Though combined each folio will still be evident on the final billing. But when you split adult family members into 2 different cabins it is not as easily linked, more steps are needed get this done yet be separate from, in this case, the other family's master or individual on board account(s). You must link the separate bookings online by adding the other cabin's booking number which gives each person between the 2 cabins with a Carnival.com logon access to all the online check-in information for both families. Then when setting up for the on board expenses you must visit each individual cabins booking to indicate which if any of those occupants in the individual cabins will have folios together as a linked S&S accounts. This really only matters if you are using a single credit card between spouses or SOs, if cash accounts are the plan just have everyone be responsible for their own deposits.

If on board credit or cruise cash is involved things can get more complicated and a PVP or the on board guest services rep will need to be involved to split things equitably.

You put a credit card for your charges, the person you share cabin with will put their S&s with their credit card.... in the other cabin, your husband will put his account on a credit card (can be the same credit card # as yours) and the person he shares a cabin with will put their account on a credit card... each account is individual... I know you usually check in using one credit card for you and your husband... this time just put yourself on a card, your husband on a card and each guest on their own card... hope that helps

You can't book this way an then 'switch rooms' at guest services. If you want to do this (and I certainly would), you have to commit to it.

When everyone checks in they set up their own onboard account. The issued S&S cards will be to the wrong rooms. This can't be changed, if you book anything or do anything on the ship where they need your room number you give the room number you are booked in.

What you can do is go to guest services and get two extra room keys. So the two people in the 'wrong' cabin will just have two cards. One card with their bev package on it and for charging, and one that is a key to the room they r sleeping in.

Downside is both couples will have a key to the others room so hopefully you guys are close and don't have boundary issues.

We did it. Both my DH and I received free cruises from a land based casino. I booked his sister in my cabin and DH booked his BIL with him. Once on board, we ALL had to go to GS and explain that DH and I were going to be in his cabin and BIL and sister were in my cabin. No fuss, they made us new cards and linked our credit cards correctly. The only one confused was the Cabin Steward ,because I was clearly not named Chuck LOL!:')

I would love to see the check-in agent's face if both couples check in at the same time! :p

"Oh, so Mr. Smith is sharing the cabin with Mrs. Jones, and Mr. Jones is sharing with Mrs. Smith? Have a great cruise!"

I think They see it all the time! When we did it once they did not even bat an eye...

My father-in-law and I are booked in one room and my wife, 2 kids, and mother-in-law are booked in another. My FIL and I bought Cheers! (and plan to make the most of it). My wife and MIL were not interested. Of course, I will share the room with my wife and kids, and my MIL will be in the room with my FIL.

The onboard accounts were no problem. I linked the 2 reservations and set up a charge account for myself and put my wife and kids on the same card. I set up a charge account for my FIL with his card and gave my MIL charging privileges on that account. Easy!

We do this EVERY YEAR...as we only have 2 drinkers between the 4 of us...we go to guest services, tell them we are switching rooms and they give us new cards...HAVE NEVER HAD TO CARRY 2 CARDS AROUND WITH ME..MY CHEERS GOES ON THE NEW CARD

  • 4 months later...

Similar question, I'm hoping with all of the good advice in this thread, hopefully people will circle back around and see this question as well.

The Scenario:

Two couples, one in a Spa cabin and one not in a spa cabin (but rooms very nearby each other). One person in each cabin wants Cheers, the other does not (there will be no sharing, as above there are reasons for each of the non-drinkers). I've read many many times over the years of switching people who both want Cheers into one cabin and then just getting extra room keys for the correct cabins. But how would that work if one is a Spa cabin and one is not ?

For example ... Sally & Steve are in Spa cabin, Nancy & Ned are Not in spa cabin. Sally & Ned want Cheers, Nancy & Steve do not. Makes sense, just swap them around and get extra room keys. But, if Nancy & Steve end up switched to be together in the spa cabin, how would Sally get her access to the spa if all she has is an 'extra room key' for the spa cabin ?

Not worried about the onboard spending accounts. That part is already figured out.

Exactly, easiest to make the changes at the port if you've already combined charges online!

I believe in this case you have to make a choice between Cheers or the Spa. Cheers is linked to you and your folio number, the spa is linked to your cabin assignment. EM

Well, that would be nice, as I am set up to do the extra room key, and two of our group will have to carry 2 cards. Booked 2 cabins, cabin A has 3 over 21 and has CHEERS, cabin B has one over 21 and one under 21, no CHEERS. Going to swap 1 21 year old from A for the over 21 from B. I did not think GS would alow that, or if they did, would make me purchase another CHEERS for the new over 21 in cabin A.
