Internet service in northern latitudes

I'm on the Voyage of the Vikings this July and August aboard the Rotterdam. Just a question to those who sailed that route (or similar routes) in previous years. How consistent/dependable is the Internet service once we get into Labrador & Greenland waters, as well as between Greenland and Iceland? All information and guidance is appreciated.

In the Canadian easten Arctic, satellite service is okay up until the middle of Baffin Island. It reduces quickly from there to Lancaster Sound, north of which it is not available. When you get into the fjords you will lose the signal due to the mountains.

The satellites that Holland America currently uses are geostationary above the equator. So the farther north or south a ship is sailing from the equator the internet service is going to get worse. My experience is that it will be unreliable in northern latitudes.

Great question (I'm on the cruise with you). :D

I'm wondering which ports have internet cafes or free wifi in town. Probably not some of our tinier ports I'm thinking...

For the ports you would be better off on cell service. I use $10 a day international travel passes when outside US and Canadian ports that my carrier, AT&T offers. Simple.

If you want to find free wifi ask crew members. They will know the internet cafes and free hotspots.

Thank you. We have used a similar plan with Verizon for ports outside the US. DH is a retired Verizon employee so we get it for $5/day.
