Unused Shipboard Credit

It all depends on where the credit came from. We were on a coastal and had credit and was surprised when they called my husband to come down to the pursers office to get it?? So you never know. However you will use up $200 of the credit for the tips on 10 days. With cocktails, shore excusions, etc. you probably won't have anything left. Ask the pursers office and they can let you know what the policy is on the credit. You can always buy Princess souvenirs or use it to give extra tips to excellent employees.

It is easier than you think to use it. There are charges to your account every day, automatic tips, drinks, etc. Since your shipboard credit is posted to your account, ANY charges are deducted from it. If you want to use it for charges other than your normal ones, make a mental note about it and use it that way. However, it won't really matter once your bill comes. It will be a credit that appears on the top of the bill. On our last cruise it was applied automatically to our first charges which happened to be excursions. Fine with me. Any cruise credits are welcomed here!:)

A few years ago, last day onboard, as we were waiting to disembark, our name was called to come to the Purser's Office. We almost didn't go but decided maybe it was an incoming phone call from one of our kids. Could have knocked us over when we were told they wanted to give us the unused portion of our shipboard credit. It was only about $25 but we thought it was very classy of Princess! Have no idea if this was an isolated incident. Can't hurt to inquire at the Purser's Office before you do the casino thing.

You can also use it in the gift shop. Last year on Holland America we had shipboard credit money left over and spent it on Jockey underwear and Grand Marnier which we brought home.

I think Princess has some pretty nice clothing in their shops (not to mention jewelry) - spend it and enjoy!

We had the same credit on our Tahitian cruise and spent every penny plus some. Between the tips and tours that took most of it and then the few things we purchased really add up. I am grateful for any shipboard credit I can get. One cruise we went on we had a $200 credit and if my husband wouldn't have bought something expensive in the shop we would have had the lowest bill ever. As it was our bill was only about $45 after the credit was taken off.

If you still have a credit, go to the casino and get a cash advance against your stateroom account. They'll charge you 3%, but that's not much.

We made the mistake of adding on $1500 shipboard credit onto our account before we left. I thought we'd use it for sure (family of 4) since the shore excursions alone were over $1,000. Once onboard, one of the kids got sick so we had to cancel 1 shore excursion, then Princess gave us a $200 shipboard credit and we ended up with over $500 credit still by the last day. Plus, we had a $300 shipboard credit to start with from using Future Booking Credits.

We went to the casino to get our money back because we asked 3 different pursers how we would be credited that money back and ALL 3 gave us a totally different answer. (In other words, the communication and training of the pursers is not very good.) We decided we didn't want to risk having our names called out on the last day to come to the pursers office and pick up our cash, so we just went to the casino and paid the 3%.

They will call you on the PA on the last morning if you have a credit balance. They did that to us the second time we were on the Grand and we had to wait in a miserable, long, long line to get $7.56 back even though I told them via phone that I didn't want the money!!

Whatever you do, don't have a credit on your last day of the cruise.

Lynda, I did not know you could cash out your SBC in the casino. That is good news! Do you just go in to the casino and -- what exactly? Thanks for the info.

Gloria, I just saw your post. Glad Lady Jag answered it. I have never done this myself as I've never had anything left over, but have heard that many others have done it.

We had $450 SBC on our last cruise. We went to the Purser's Desk several times during the cruise to get a print-out of our account. We asked what would happen if we didn't use all that credit (you've got to be kidding!). There was $300 on my husband's account and $150 on mine. However, because we used one credit card to charge everything, the credit would ultmimately be taken out of the total charges of both accounts. They did say, that if we had used separate credit cards and one of the accounts hadn't used all the credit, that it would be lost. Happy cruising!:)
