Ellaleah Posted April 3, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2018 we will be traveling to Hong Kong and a few cities in Japan. Is it best to pay with the foreign currencies or use credit cards with no foreign currency fees? When one purchases foreign currency in the country, can one use a visa credit card? Rare mom says Posted April 4, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 4, 2018 Use local currency for small purchases. The easiest way, and best exchange rate will be withdrawing cash at a local ATM, using your bank ATM or debit card. Just be sure to notify your bank before you go. Use your credit card for larger purchases, Most places that take credit cards will accept Visa or Mastercard . Again, notify the CC company before you go. Floridiana Posted April 4, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 4, 2018 In Japan, draw cash from ATM's in Seven Eleven stores and post offices.
Philob Posted April 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 4, 2018 (edited) Do what 'mom says"'. If you buy anything in the HK street markets you're expected to haggle over the price and cash is King! I believe obtaining foreign currency with you Visa credit card is a Cash Advance and you probably incur a hefty cash advance fee. Use your debit card for cash withdrawals, but check with your bank about fees for using it. Edited April 4, 2018 by Philob
