Moose12345 Posted June 5, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I was told that tipping in Europe isn't as customary as other places. We plan on extra tips for the ship, but can anyone tell me if this is true for the tours? We usually tip for tours, but we have never been to Europe, so I'm not sure what we are supposed to do.:confused:
Biris Posted June 9, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2018 We tipped 10 Euro pp for all of our all day tours that we were very happy with and 5 and 7 Euro pp for the ones that were good. This was our first Europe trip, and the drivers/guides seemed appreciative and were not surprised.

I would be more likely to either round up or give 10% depending on how much cash I have on me. E.g last night I went out for a meal, drinks and had a taxi home. I rounded up the meal, the tip came to about 7%, the waiter thanked me. We went for drinks in the Casino, we would not think of tipping the bar staff but left 50p for the cloakroom attendant. The taxi was £9.50 and I gave £10. The driver would have returned my 50p and not expected a tip. 10% is often applied in restaurants when there are 8 people or more in the party. All other times it is left to the traveller's discretion. I am going to find it hard to work out what to do in our upcoming trip to Alaska. cruiserking Posted June 21, 2018 #4 Share Posted June 21, 2018 All tour guides expect to make tips, except for some parts of Asia. At least 10 euros per person is what I tip in Europe. Jonathan

GrJ Berkshire Posted June 25, 2018 #6 Share Posted June 25, 2018 10€ pp is way too much in Europe. Why if its not so good give€7 or anything this is the European norm, your US accent gives away you will tip. Of course they will not say no, its the conditioning that tourist people have re North Americans.. Remember all European tour guides are paid at or above minimum wage, so do not depend on tips, there is no tax advantage in any European country to underpay and expect tips to top Up which is the way in the US. So you do not need to tip, just when it's exceptional or someone's goes above and beyond what they are contracted to do (and fully paid for). Tour guides in Europe, especially official guides are very well paid. Far above any minimum wage. They have done years of study and have guiding qualifications.
