Kennycapes Posted July 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2018 Looking to travel to Rome for the day by train, to estimate how long it will take to walk to the station, how do i find out which berth the ship will dock at? Some people on here seem to know their number? Many thanks
CruiserBruce Posted July 9, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 9, 2018 The best way is to Google search for the Port schedule. It may not show the assigned dock/terminal until some predetermined advance time, like one or two weeks prior to docking date.
Rare steamboats Posted July 9, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 9, 2018 The port of Civitavecchia used to tell the berth on the website but they have discontinued this. So no way to find it out. And it can change. Even when a certain ship has dock at a certain berth the last time it can dock at another one the next time. steamboats
Rare Hlitner Posted July 9, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 9, 2018 Most of the mass market vessels are docked at an area that is pretty far from the old Port Entrance (by the Fort) where you want to walk if going to the station. It could take you anywhere from 20 min to nearly an hour just to get to the that port Exit...depending on your walking speed and exact docking position. Once outside the port it will take you about 10-15 minutes (at a good pace) to get to the train station. Once at the station you still need to purchase a ticket which will add a few more minutes. Docking positions can be changed by the Port...right up to the last day. Lots of experience has taught us to just go with the flow and not even lose sleep trying to estimate the time. But if we are at one of the more distant pier locations we might grab the free shuttle bus. From the shuttle drop point you can buy a 2€ ticket for the bus that will drop you right across the street from the train station. If we are docked a bit closer to the old port entrance, the weather is nice, and we are feeling full of energy we might decide to do a fast walk to the station. When we get there...we get there as its just a matter of hopping on the next train. Hank
euro cruiser Posted July 10, 2018 #5 Share Posted July 10, 2018 One thing you can be sure of, if you sail on one of the monster-sized ships you will be berthed at the most inconvenient location at Civitavecchia (#25 or possibly #23) because that's where they fit. Rare steamboats Posted July 10, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 10, 2018 euro cruiser, Seems like this is changing too. We docked at 13 with the Symphony of the Seas. A container ship was docked at 25. steamboats
Jimjamz Posted July 14, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 14, 2018 We were on the Fantasia which is pretty big and at #12. In a line with a Costa and a Disney ship. Check train times and then give yourself about 45 mins before your desired train to leave ship, take shuttle to port entrance , then take next shuttle to train station (2E pp) and then buy your train ticket. They haven't made it simple or quick at this port to get to the train station.

Consider that in Livorno you are not generally permitted to walk from the pier out of the port and your only option will often be a taxi. And most of the taxis will simply refuse short haul fares to the train station :(. We did like Civitavecchia better when they were using the Port Entrance/Exit by the Fort (an easy walk to the train station). But even their new arrangement is not too bad given that the port bus does connect to a local shuttle bus that will get you directly to the station. buzzybuzzbuzz Posted July 24, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 24, 2018 The port shuttle buses will take you to the TI where you get an other shuttle to the train station 2E as others have said and very easy, it will be busy but it moves quickly. A word of caution though on our May trip we did this from NCL Epic, our train was stopped about 20km out of Civitavecchia at San Severano as some poor person had thrown themselves in front of the train in front of ours. The whole line was shut down for the rest of the day, local buses were completely swamped and as it was a country station there were very few taxis, after a 2&1/2 hour wait we got a taxi back to Civitavecchia via a helpful Carabinieri at a cost of 80E. I don't know how experienced people are but make sure you have plenty cash for such scenarios. I always carry 200E just in case these things happen, good advice from folks on here and hopefully anyone else reading this post will be better prepared for the unthinkable. We got back in loads of time but lost our day to Rome, some other poor soul lost their life.
