Internet connection - South America

We will be on the Royal going around the horn from BA to LA and wondering how slow or fast the connection will be. Need to buy minutes because I need to connect with home. Trying to figure which package/how many minutes I will need.

Once you get south of the Beagle Channel/Ushuaia connectivity will be poor to nonexistent.

There will be no satellite TV stations in your cabin either.

Until you get 'round the horn and into the Pacific logging on will be entirely at your own risk of watching your minutes tick away without ever accessing the web.

 

But as you will be onboard for nearly five weeks the outage window is just a small percentage of your entire cruise. So plan on buying however many minutes you will otherwise need.

We did LA to BA about 2 1/2 years ago and found the internet surprisingly acceptable. Yes there were one or two times for an hour or so when there was no connection but overall pretty good. We both had Platinum minutes (I think it was 500 minutes each) so that certainly helped as far as time on the internet goes and it was sufficient for us.

We are both Elite and get internet minutes as a perk. We will board in Fort Lauderdale and go to LA. We will get 750 minutes each. I just keep an eye on our usage and we will be close to running out when we sail into San Pedro at the end of the cruise.

Had no problem around the horn. Did have outages in a couple places where mountains were close to the channel or port and blocked access.

I found that there was enough bandwidth to get only the incompletely downloaded email. When I tried to download the remainder, it choked badly, to the point that I frequently gave up.
