Rotterdam - The windmills of Kinderdijk

 Share

Recommended Posts

When we visited on an excursion from our river cruise, we were "let loose," so to speak.  There are at least 5 windmills along the canal and I believe they're each a bit different so interesting from at least a photographic aspect.  There is one you can go into to see how it works, I believe.

Our experience was also on a river cruise.  We had a guided tour of the area and observed the windmills from the outside.  At one windmill, we were given the opportunity to go inside and view its inner workings.  You can climb the steps if you wish, or just walk around the ground floor and outside area.  It was very interesting!

What are the grounds like around the windmills?  Are they suitable for someone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues?

Thanks.

Yes, it is flat and paved However entering a mill is a different story, often stairs.

According to the Kinderdijk website, wheel chairs can be used except inside a windmill.  Their FAQ's state:

Is it possible to visit Kinderdijk in a wheelchair?

A toilet for disabled guests is available in the Visitor centre Wisboom pumpstation.

We have two wheelchairs available, free of charge, ask our collegues in the Visitor centre.

Visiting inside the windmills is not possible with a wheelchair. You can however visit the grounds surrounding the windmill.

The film in the Visitor centre Wisboom pumpstation, the paths between the windmills, and the Cruiser and Hopper boat are all accessible for wheelchairs.

A wheelchair user gets free entrance to World Heritage Kinderdijk. The person accompanying the guest in the wheelchair has to pay for an entrance ticket.

Parking is free.

Their website is https://www.kinderdijk.com/discover/the-story/unesco-world-heritage/

You can see pictures of what to expect as far as terrain.
