over night in Civitavecchia then Ostia Antiqua

Hello,

We will be on a West Med cruise with a full day in between another cruise to the Easter Med, both from Rome. The cruises are on different lines and not back to back. We'd like to stay in Civitavecchia to go to Ostia Antiqua.

Questions:

Is the most practical way of getting to Ostia Antiqua a taxi?  We would first drop off our luggage at the hotel and then go for a tour.

Any hotel or B& B recommendations?

Thanks!  We are doing Rome before the first cruise.

A taxi will cost you close to 100 euro each way, unless you can negotiate a special rate.

I would recommend you get settled in your hotel and then take the train to Ostia. It's not the fastest route, but it's very doable, especially if you don't have the time constraint of having to be back onboard ship at a certain time.

You'd take any of the Regionale (local) or Regionale Veloce (slightly faster/fewer stops) headed to Rome, and get off at Roma Ostiense station -- about an hour ride. From there you transfer to the Roma-Lido railway line which departs from the Porta San Paolo station (which is connected to the Ostiense station -- just follow the signs for Roma-Lido line). Board a train headed in the direction of Lido -- they leave every 15 minutes and it takes about 30 minutes to the Ostia Antica stop.  Using the pedestrian bridge, cross the busy highway and follow the path about 100 meters to the site entrance. Very easy (and cheap!).

If you haven't already found it, there's a good, printable guide to the ruins here:   https://www.ostia-antica.org/touristguide.pdf

We loved our day in Ostia Antica last year!

This is the stops inside the train leaving from the San Paolo Station after you transfer from the other train you take first.

This is the sign at the station once we arrived at our stop.

This is a look back at the little station that you arrive at.  There is a free bathroom at the station.

If you go over the bridge and keep walking you will see signs for Ostia Antica, but it is pretty much a straight walk.   We are prone to getting lost, and we made it easy as can be.  Ostia Antica is amazing!

We think the most "practical" way would be to simply rent a car for the day.  You can shop around (online) and will probably pay about $60 (US) for a small nice car.  Driving to Ostia is relatively easy (you do not have to go anywhere near Rome) and there is parking near the entrance.  You could also drive into the seaside town of Fiumcino and have a decent lunch plus a nice walk along the sea wall.

As to using taxis, the problem is that you would want at least 2 hours (possibly 3+) in the ruins.  You could have a taxi wait and it will cost you a few hundred Euros.  Using one-way taxis will also cost you at least 150 Euros.  And getting a taxi at Ostia will likely require a phone call and some waiting.  I do not recall taxis sitting around Ostia just waiting for fares.
