Sunny SA Posted June 10, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 10, 2019 Am looking at this cruise April/May 2021. Has anyone done this? Am a bit worried that it is too early in the season for Alaska. Any advice? Bering sea rough this time of year?
Sir PMP Posted June 10, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 10, 2019 Did this on the Volendam in 2011, after leaving Petropavlosk we were in hurricane 1 for 3 days, freezing cold, so yes the Bering Sea can be rough. I assume you're looking at the Noordam, you will becoming out of Kushiro which is much lower and should be much calmer, maybe 2 days of rough stuff. Kodiak island at 45 degrees and will feel balmy to you. Don't miss Vladivostok, great city..
Floridiana Posted June 10, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 10, 2019 We had good weather in October. You never know. I always bring medication and take it when needed.
RuthC Posted June 10, 2019 #4 Share Posted June 10, 2019 I did the east-bound a few years ago, and don't remember it being especially rough. When we got to the Aleutians we sailed north of the islands to get out of the Pacific, as that was rougher. Sitka was beautiful! Kodiak and Glacier Bay were cold, but not awful.

SilvertoGold Posted June 10, 2019 #6 Share Posted June 10, 2019 (edited) Done this twice, once fine, 8 foot seas, some wind, some movement. Second time 20 foot seas, force 11 winds. Much movement for 3 days. Fun walking the deck and stopping to hang onto the rail when it got bad. I remember reading that once there was snow between Japan and Alaska on this cruise. Alaska will be cool - cold most likely. Agree with Taters that Alaska is beautiful in May, snow on all the mountains! cruzn single Posted June 13, 2019 #7 Share Posted June 13, 2019 (edited) PMP, think we were on same voyage! My DH and I never suffered any seasickness or any other Ill effects, but it certainly was a cruise to remember. If you aren’t in the Bering Sea, probably not as rough! i remember Captain saying it was a Force 12 storm, and waves were 45 feet. I talked to a Captain on a subsequent cruise, and he said it is a “famous” cruise among HAL Captains. LOL!
