Cashing a check

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if you can cash a check at guest services. This is our first NCL cruise. I know I can cash one check per cruise on RCCL. Prefer doing it that way instead on carrying the cash for tips at the end. Thanks in advance

Travels Checks cashed - definitely - there is a daily limit.

Certified Bank Money Orders - probably maybe with ID - limits.

Personal checks - ? ? ? ? ? very doubtful.

Suggestion go to your bank and get a certified check and or check

other options with a debit card bank VISA card.

Have a ATM card - cash is available in most ships casinos for a fee.

Paying those tips - can do - without cash - go to Guest Services and

fill out a voucher for direct payment to the crew members account -

will be billed on your Onboard Account - no service charge to you.

Travelers Checks maybe so passé but they still work - but for the

most part the world is all PLASTIC payment.

NCL is very clear on the web site under FAQ's "How do I pay for onboard expenses"

How do I pay for onboard expenses?

For your convenience, all shipboard expenses are charged to your Onboard account. Sign up when you check in, establishing your method of payment with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB Card, Diner's Club. You may also use your debit card however please be advised that we obtain pre-authorization, as we do for all Credit Cards, and some banks hold these funds for up to 30 days. Cash can also be used as a method of payment to settle your account with an initial deposit paid in advance.

Using your debit or ATM card

  • Norwegian does not recommend the use of a debit card as payment for your onboard folio.
  • Please be advised that multiple holds will be placed on your debit card account based on your onboard purchases.
  • After settling your onboard folio, these debit card holds may remain on your account up to 30 days after the cruise ends.
  • To avoid overdraft charges from your bank, please make sure that you have enough available funds in your account during this hold period.
  • Norwegian will not be responsible for overdraft charges resulting from holds placed on Debit Card accounts.

Traveler’s Check / Cash Procedures

A cash deposit may be placed on your onboard account in the following amounts:

7 day cruises - $300 USD per person
Less than 7 days - $150 USD per person
More than 7 days - $450 USD per person

Once you have exceeded the deposited amount, your account will be closed to further charges. You can deposit as much money as often as you'd like throughout the cruise, however, refunds cannot be made until the day of disembarkation for any excess.

**Personal checks will not be accepted, nor can they be cashed on board.

Just prepay your Daily Service Charge and there is no need to leave any additional gratuities.

Butler and Concierge aren't included in the Daily Service Charge.  Also if kids are in the Youth Program those folks aren't included either.

Put $100-$150 in a Small manila envelope, put in carry on/personal item and take with you. Been doing it for 40 years.

Carry on/personal item with envelope  never leaves my sight except at hotel and ship that have safes.

While this is correct the OP is asking about having cash to pay extra gratuities, not the on board account.

For the vast majority of cruisers simply paying the Daily Service Charge covers all tipping needs.

OP was asking specifically about cashing a check.  How the funds are used are not relevant, but the fact that NCL states

"**Personal checks will not be accepted, nor can they be cashed on board."  should provide all the details that the OP needs to make an informed decision.
