Transportation from Newark Airport to Lower Manhattan

Does anyone have suggestions regarding the best way to get from Newark Airport to lower Manhattan around the Financial District?  In previous visits we've stayed in midtown and there was a convenient and inexpensive bus that took us from the airport to Grand Central area.  We've decided to stay in lower Manhattan for our November sailing on Princess since it will be departing from the Red Hook dock in Brooklyn.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

From your airline terminal take the AirTrain to the Newark Airport station and take NJ Transit one stop to Newark Penn Station. in At Newark Penn Station take PATH to the World Trade Center station .

This is the logical, least expensive, straightforward way to do it.  The only problem might be if you are bringing a fair amount of luggage, taking three mass transit trains might be a hassle.

AirTrain is designed for passengers with luggage .  You can even take a luggage cart aboard. there are elevators that run between the AirTrain station and the railroad station.

You're on NJ Transit for literally 6 to 7 minutes...that's all the time it takes to get from the airport to Newark Penn Station. You can easily just stand near the one of the doors for that short time.

Only PATH might present a problem if you're traveling during peak times.

Thank you both for the information.  We have taken the air train/NJ Transit to Penn Station in the past when we were staying near Penn Station, however we have never taken PATH.  Is that part of the subway system or another train?

PATH is a subway-like system run by the Port Authority of NY and NJ. the Name PATH is derived from Port Authority Trans Hudson.

If you're traveling light, it may be a bit easier to travel by New Jersey Transit bus direct from the airport to Newark Penn Station, than the AirTrain + New Jersey Transit commuter train. The no. 62 bus stops in the bus lane at each of the three airport passenger terminals about every 15-20 minutes throughout the day, and the ride to Penn Station is about 20 minutes. You will need $1.60 exact fare, and the timetable notes that baggage is limited to two pieces per passenger, not exceeding 22" x 16" x 8". Once at Penn Station, it is a quick ride on the PATH train to lower Manhattan.

In years past Coach USA had operated an express bus route between each of the Newark airport bus terminals and lower Manhattan, and you may read about such service at some venues. But that service is no more, and from the airport Coach USA now operates only into midtown Manhattan.

Thanks for the information regarding the bus to NJ Penn Station.  We always do carry-on luggage when traveling so that could work.  Sure wish Coach USA still went to lower Manhattan.  We took it to midtown on our trip there in November and it was really convenient.

When the company first started up its route, it made a stop at the World Trade Center on the way from EWR to midtown. Later, it set up separate routes from EWR to both midtown and lower Manhattan, though there was much less service to lower Manhattan. The events of 9/11/01 disrupted everything, and at this point I don't think the lower Manhattan service will return in the foreseeable future.
