Suzcruz57 Posted June 9, 2022 #1 Share Posted June 9, 2022 I am thinking of going to Alaska and there is so much to consider. The first idea I believe is which ship. We’ve been on the Eurodam, Niew Statendam, and Niew Amsterdam. However we’ve not sailed the smaller ones and wonder if that would be better for Alaska. Could you all chime in on guiding us to the right ship? Thanks in advance!
CruiserBruce Posted June 9, 2022 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2022 I think the itinerary is more important. Do some reading on the Alaska board for the variety of ports, and most importantly the "cruising only" places, like Glacier Bay, Hubbard and Tracy Arm. Then select the route, and the ship, that works best for your desired targets.
Cruise Suzy Posted June 9, 2022 #3 Share Posted June 9, 2022 I would pick the itinerary first - roundtrip or one-way, ports visited, which embarkation/debarkation port(s). To me that matters more than the ship.
muffin Posted June 10, 2022 #4 Share Posted June 10, 2022 I’d suggest sailing out if Vancouver. If on HAL you will go north and south on the east side of Vancouver Island which has wonderful views. If you leave from Seattle you go up and down on the west side of Vancouver island where you are so far from shore you don’t even see land. Makes a huge difference as the scenery is close and spectacular. Imho
quack2 Posted June 10, 2022 #5 Share Posted June 10, 2022 Agree. Itinerary first. I also prefer a cruise that is a round trip from Vancouver or a one-way to Vancouver from Whittier or Seward.
