When we stopped there last month, we parked at a pier walking distance to Old San Juan and the forts - it's a super easy port to explore on your own.

That's the pier I'm counting on. The pier is to far from town.

The Pan American pier, across the harbor, is usually for Royal and Celebrity for their ships that sail R/T from San Juan.  EM

PCL used to use that terminal when they also ran cruises out of SJU, but that is a long time ago now.  I gather they weren't money-makers because the fares were low to get people to fly down from the mainland at much higher cost and longer trip.  Then, they were often having to sell cabins locally at a discount.  From a guest standpoint, it was nice to have a couple of those trips since you were starting the voyage in the Caribbean and many more islands could be visited in a week.  Now, we look to sail for more than a week at a time.
