Upgrading onboard

I have heard people talking about upgrading when onboard. I'm just wondering how this works and what prices they charge you at. Do they charge the price at the time you booked, or the current time, or do they have special prices for upgrading onboard.

Now that cruises are sailing close to full capacity (allowing for quarantine cabins) the chances of any upgrade are remote.

On our five week cruise in February with only 900 pax on board we enquired about an upgrade to a balcony, we were quoted £1500 pp, tried again with two weeks left and were quoted the exact same amount , nearly all of our deck was empty and not through quarantine location, while I understand why they chose that amount at the beginning of the cruise ( other pax will have paid that much to book a balcony) with two weeks left it would have brought some extra revenue in for very little effort .

The days of cheap onboard upgrades are, I am afraid, long gone - certainly on P&O

I'm not really bothered about having a balcony, but thought if you can get cheap upgrades onboard I might have tried one. It doesn't look like it though.

We paid £200 to upgrade from inside to balcony 3 days in to an 11 day cruise back in April

Each or in total. Either is cheap, but if the total then £25 a day is very cheap.
