I started the process of checking in online, and under "account", it says that I have to bring $420 in cash to the front desk within 24 hours of boarding. What does this mean? Why in the world do I need to bring $420 to the front desk?

Sounds like you have not provided a credit card for your on board account.  True? If so, they are looking for cash on account to cover your charges to your room. Standard procedure.

You don’t, you present your card at check in.  If you are using Verifly you can add it there.  Big caution- you still need to bring physical proof, verifly is not used in all locations

Check in has nothing to do with your room assignment...its entering the passport info, emergency contact, credit card, flight info, etc.

 

Upsells and upgrades are about what the inventory management people need to do to fill the ship. Like when there are many guarantee bookings, Club Orange assignments, sales for certain level cabins forcing people upward, etc.
