Note that the crew did an excellent job in spite of the Captain's lacking instruction and then he too jumped ship early on abandoning his duties. But, as a further note, the only reason the ship rolled on its side was that it grounded again on the island. Had muster drill been called when Schettino was notified that the ship was flooding (and the number of compartments that were flooding, which he knew to be more than the ship could stay afloat with), which was nearly 45 minutes before the ship grounded a second time, then the muster could have been completed, with all pax at their boats, and all crew at their emergency stations, long before any boats became unusable. And, 23 of 26 lifeboats were launched, meaning that 10 boats on the "high" side of the ship were actually launched.
don't-use-real-name Posted December 12, 2022 #27 Share Posted December 12, 2022 Regardless of the method of the mandatory "Colonel Mustered" Drill - - - Locate that Muster Station in person within the first few days of the cruise How to get there easily - Remember elevators are out of service except for the wheelchair bound HC Is it easier to pass by your cabin to get the life vests or go directly to the Station where vests will be available - Remember in colder climates to have accessible cold weather gear at hand and suitable footwear when going to the Muster Station - In a real emergency - Stairs may be crowded - look for direction of crew members to use hidden crew stairs to get to the Muster Station - Pay attention to announcements - instructions - As noted in a previous post - go to your assigned Muster Station to be accounted for unless otherwise directed Don't be hard to find - this is not a time for hide and seek games - Take the Muster Drills seriously - your life and your love ones depend on it ! Rare MarkusToe Posted December 12, 2022 #29 Share Posted December 12, 2022 (edited) The real problem is not the drill. That comes with live emergency. Forget everything you have seen, heared. This will be a nightmare, for shure. I've done exercices for pro firebrigades....some members of them just run.... And the captain ended up in jail where he rightfully belongs.
