MadamedelaMer Posted May 6, 2023 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2023 Yaay! Just booked it. Unfortunately were not able to get an assigned cabin for NS so keeping fingers crossed we don't wind up in a dreaded connecting room... Any other Alaska cruisers out there with advice or tips (must-dos, anything to avoid, favorite parts of the ship, etc). Also are there any formal (black tie) nights to be aware of? Thanks! Rare Mary229 Posted May 6, 2023 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2023 I have never had an issue with connecting rooms. Alaska is generally fairly relaxed dress. No black tie is required on any HAL ship just one set of nicer clothing. I didn’t look at your cruise so don’t have any particular ideas. MadamedelaMer Posted May 6, 2023 Author #3 Share Posted May 6, 2023 Thanks Mary! This is helpful. It will be nice to not have to travel with finery. And great suggestion re: the rain jacket--we'll definitely be packing for weather!
Blackduck59 Posted May 7, 2023 #4 Share Posted May 7, 2023 Do pack a Merino wool sweater, you won't need it often but they are wonderful to keep you warm even if they get wet. A light weight rain shell to put over your other layers will cut the wind and shed the rain. Take some hotshot type hand warmers, they come in handy when you're on deck at the glaciers. I hope you have a decent stop in Victoria, there is much to say. Although Butchart Gardens is spectacular it is at least 45 minutes from the port. The gardens at Government house are very nice, open to the public and free of charge. Government house is also much closer to the port.
Papa Yoda Posted May 7, 2023 #5 Share Posted May 7, 2023 We're signed up for the Tracy Arm excursion and Hump Island Oyster Farm (Ketchikan). Our Tracy Arm excursion in 2017 was redirected to Endicott Arm due to ice in TA (late May). We enjoyed the excursion and had a great time anyway. Did Hump Island in 2019 and loved it. Small family run Oyster farm partnered with a kelp farmer - the best Oysters and a good time at the touch tank -- DW likes to grab the sea cucumber. Helped them pull star fish off the oysters in a cage that had got dropped. 2019 was the first season for this tour. If you appreciate oysters this is a great tour. The helicopter ride to Mendenhall glacier and walk on the glacier was expensive, but worth it!
