Tipping Customs

Anyone have any do's/don'ts on tipping in SE Asia countries? How do locals feel about accepting American dollars or do we need to get money in local currency?   Thanks!!

Don't try to tip Customs. They'll think you are trying  to bribe them.

 

Tipping is not customary in most SE Asian countries. However if you wish to tip for an outstanding service, use the local currency

Customs doesn't usually stamp passports...Immigration does. 😄

We did a southeast Asia land trip last year. I assume you are talking about tipping in ports and not on ship tipping? Our experience is that everyone there is very happy to receive a tip. The local economies are quite poor. You don't have to tip as much as you do in the US. I believe 10-15% was recommended. Yes, you will need to get local currency. None of the countries we went to besides Cambodia wanted US currency.

The OP was not asking about tipping in North America, Australia, or Europe. They asked about Asia. And in some Asian countries tipping is not only not expected, it is considered rude, and an affront to that person. When travelling, it's wise to be aware of local customs and leave your personal habits at home. 

 

Of course the person would be unlikely to refuse a tip. That would also be considered just as rude. But their opinion of you would remain the same.

Agree.  I once saw a tip refused by an airport shuttle bus driver in Singapore.
