Westerdam Ocean View - Under Bars and Kitchen... Noise?

 Share

Recommended Posts

We just booked the Westerdam in an Ocean View on deck 1, Port side, it is under the Gallery Bar maybe even the Casino.   All the Ocean Views currently available seems to be under potential noisy area like the Galley or other areas where they would have music in the evening.   Or they have connecting doors to another cabin.  Does anyone have experience sailing in Ocean Views on the Westerdam?   What was your experience.

I need help to reassure the wife that we won't be bothered by noise.  Is there a better choice I could have made besides upgrading to a balcony?

The Gallery bar is usually a subdued atmosphere and if anything like most HAL ships everything shuts down around 10 anyway.  There are a few areas to avoid - the galley and lido galley, the loud bars like Rolling Stones and curiously  the theater - even though the shows finish fairly early in the evening they do hold rehearsal in the afternoon during premium nap time 😴

The Rolling Stone lounge is near the gallery bar, and I have heard can be quite noisy. I was under the Billboard bar service area (1005) on sister ship Zuiderdam for 71 days recently and it was noisy between 10:30-11 pm when carts were actively rolling (cleanup?). Friends were under the galley (ocean view aft a few cabins from guest services) and were awakened all night by loud pounding and cart rolling from food prep. They hated it.

If it were me I would look into an fully or partially obstructed ocean view on deck 4. They have the full-size door/window combination of the balcony, just without a door or balcony. Either a tender (aft of center elevator) or lifeboat (forward of center elevator) hangs outside. All the light with perhaps not much view. The lifeboats are not as tall so you can see over them better. On tender ports the tenders are gone so full view. Nice size cabin with the bed(s) by the window area. Earlier this year I changed my 24 world cruise booking from OV to a fully obstructed OV and the fare came down $10,000. A compromise I am willing to make, and lots of quiet areas on deck 4 as well, as deck 3 under you has shops, meeting rooms, photo gallery, etc. Only the Ocean Bar would have much noise and much less than Rolling Stone or Billboard.

We are talking about HAL (we recently were on the Westerdam for 6 weeks) where all the live entertainment stops by 11 and most passengers are in bed by 10.  That being said, the one bar that is open past 11pm is the Gallery Bar.  And the few remaining passengers, after 11, are likely in the casino and/or that bar..  So we would want to avoid being under those two places.
