Which side of the ship?

Does it really matter whether you choose port or starboard? In the past we've been more interested in being on a low deck and midships, but should we also be thinking of which side?  I'm currently looking at a number of cruises and would value your opinion.

The Norwegian Fjords which also visits Denmark 

Rome to Trieste or variations on a theme.

Eastern transatlantic

If sun isn’t an issue, check where the smoking deck is as smoke can waft around.
