USA Money $$$

Has anyone heard or experienced any issues with the Merchants in port at Cozumel (or anywhere in Mexico) not wanting to take USA dollars or refusing to take them?    In the past we have always just used USA currency in ports with no problem.    My friend heard that is not the case anymore, that the merchants are only excepting pesos.    I have not heard or read anything to confirm this.

All of the prices are in US Dollars - they only want bills, not change, but never had anyone on Coz not want to deal in $$

Vendors and taxi drivers - in the tourist areas and cruise ports at least - LOVE, ❤️, LOVE your $USD! They make a nicer profit from $USD and $CAD because they set their own, lower exchange rate than they receive when they exchange them for $pesos.

So very few vendors or taxi drivers in tourist areas will decline your currency…

 

“(or anywhere in Mexico)” - You will definitely need to use the local currency in non-tourist areas if you decide to travel to the interior of Mexico, or even a small town away from the tourist regions…Just like foreigners coming to your home town.

 

And even in the tourist areas, when it comes to paying our utility bills, plumber, electrician, gardner and handy man, we would just be laughed at if we tried to pay them in $USD! 😄

BIG thing.... make sure all bills are in good condition, no tears or missing corners, etc.  Their bank will refuse to take them so the merchants have to be picky.  Also, nothing bigger than a $20 bill.
