Hello all! I will be in Nassau in a couple days and I can't wait to do this!

Quick question, is Graycliff Hotel near anything on this tour? I would like to visit the "Cigar Factory" at this hotel but I have no idea where it is in relation to the tour.

Thanks!

Shane

Just got back from my cruise, with Nassau being one of the stops, and I did the walking tour. It was really fun and I thank you for taking the time to post the information.

We took our time, went in almost everything we could, and even with getting lost a few times it only took us about 4 hours. It can definitly be done in an hour or two.

I will make a post with all of my pictures later, thanks again!

The Art Gallery of the Bahamas is a must see on any walking tour. . .

Going to stop and check it out on our next trip to Nassau.

I hate our next cruise won't be stopping in our home away from home.

Excellent thread!!! Thanks for posting and thanks for everyone's follow ups after they did the tour on their own as well.

Three questions I have now:

1. The horsedrawn carriage tour. If we do this when we get off the ship - will it stop certain places while we're on the tour or is it simply a "there is ______" as we're going past it?

2. Does the carriage tour take you to some of the same places as the walking tour?

3. Is the entire tour going to be safe? Safe parts of town, etc.? I was in Nassau once before and I can't remember where we were but we didn't feel safe a couple of times. Nothing really big, just sort of the "keep moving and keep aware" type of feeling.

Thanks everyone!

We did much of this 'walking tour' on the morning of ~10Dec. Walking down queen's staircase is steep and steps are narrow -- glad we did NOT walk up them or have strollers/kids to tote. Nice legless man at top gave us the 'history' and earned his buck from us. We enjoyed this man-made canyon/escape route and it took us back down to 'hospital' parking lot and towards downtown. We found our way back to ship for lunch after straw market and walk along the waterfront and then took water taxi to atlantis walked around and saw the free stuff and took a taxi back. I forgot to go see cloisters and am still kicking myself. BTW: There are 'nice' people posted all over atlantis to keep you from straying into the 'guest-only or pay-to-get-in areas'. We were back to the ship in plenty of time for dinner. Three bucks a person water ferry to atlantis - four bucks pp taxi back to the ship. Total cost for two of us $15 - city walking tour/cheapo paradise island casino/shops/free part of aquarium. Felt safe mostly and people seemed friendly - even the ones not actively engaged in separating tourists form their money.

Be VERY CAREFUL of the horse carriage tours! We did this several years ago and it was FAST and pretty DANGEROUS as the equipment was rickety and the drivers was insane!

Just watch out! WE still talk about the "ride" so I guess in one way it was worth it.

Wow...glad you warned us. Is it as bad as that little boat that takes you from Nassau to Paradise Island? LOL Before that ride I had never really made sure that I looked for and found a life preserver because I felt like I might need it.

Very much like it except on land. We went to get into the "carriage" and it "wobbled and webbled". As we were going around curves - at almost a gallop - the carriage would shift with the turn. A couple of times I thought we were going over. I would have said something but was flabbergasted by the ride. When we got back he had his hand out for a tip and I said "DON'T PUT ANYONE IN THAT". Thought that was a good TIP!!

That's probably the best and most honest tip that he's ever gotten. I somehow doubt he took it to heart though.

I see you live here on the IOP. Have you ever sailed out of Charleston? Are the Bahamas the only cruises that they offer out of Charleston still?

We cruised out of here in 1999 on Carnival but not since. We have several friends that have done the NCL cruise from here and they have liked it. It seems to me there has been several from here to Bermuda, and later 2009 or 2010 there is supposed to be a 10 day and 11 day cruises that go to Eastern Carib.

It's funny when we cruise and we tell people we live on an island. They are like "what are you doing on a cruise then"? Funny.

Those cruises are appealing but I don't know that I want to be gone that many days! Very tempting though....

Yes, we get a similar comment. We get the "you live near so many beaches, why would you want to cruise?" We also get (more often) "If you don't like beaches - why do you cruise?" Umm...there's more to do than just the beach!

The problem is the distance from here to the "real" carib. You really can't get there on a 4 or 5 day cruise at the speed they go and faster would cost to much.

I just wish they would bring something with a balcony permanently.
