Smoking on the Prinsendam

Does anyone know whether the three or four tables on the stern port side of the Lido deck of the P'dam are still reserved for smokers? Is the Oak Room still cigars-and-cognac?

I was on the voyage immediately after yours in Nov-05. Partway through the trip, the Oak Room was closed and they began renovating it. I was on the ship again last September. The Oak Room is now a library/reading room. Definitely no more cigars-and-cognac!

They allowed it at just a few tables at Lido Pool during our Noordam cruise in January but we were told very plainly that after our cruise it was no longer going to be permitted.

 

We didn't really care all that much as it was just the few tables but given the choice, I'll always be happy to hear no smoking vs. permitted.

Yippee - glad to hear there is no smoking. But what about those folks who smoke on the balcony and you end up being next to one? We love Oceania because of the no smoking. I can breathe on Oceania, but we also love Prinsendam--so maybe we will be fortunate and NOT HAVE smokers.

 

I do feel for them, but I also have health issues.

Is the no smoking in the Lido also include the Lido pool on all ships? I have a child who can is asmatic and can't be in inclosed places with smoke. He wants to be able to swim when we go to Alaska. I've been trying to come up with how I was going to handle this. We are on the Noordam.

 

PS- if it weren't for the little guy it won't bother me. But I can't stand to see him suffer and be sick. We made the mistake of taking him to see Dora Live and they used "smoke" on stage. We had to leave because he had such a bad reaction.

Both Kakalina and I were on the Veendam. I was on the 4/1 cruise and she was on the cruise that ended 4/1. All of the covered pool area including the bar area were no smoking. My daughter and I really appreciated the no smoking there. Has anyone had no smoking in the lido pool area on other HAL ships or are we just assuming this is a fleet wide policy?

Well, I agree, but as an occasional smoker who travels with another, it would be nice if there were at least one daytime bar that smokers can go to comfortably.

 

There wasn't on the Star Princess, which was why we chose the Westerdam again for our next cruise. Now it seems we can no longer smoke in any area where we can have coffee or a bite to eat (Lido) except our own cabin and balcony, and then only if no one near us objects.

 

I know I'll get no sympathy, but hold the flames please. I've heard it all, and having already outlived all predictions, and several of my doctors, I'd just like to enjoy my remaining years, and occasional vice, in some comfort on my cruise line of choice.

On the Veendam, smoking was permitted in about 20 -25% of the Crows Nest - the back portion on the starboard side and at the bar itself. It was allowed in one part of the Ocean Bar. It was not permitted in the Sports Bar so no annoying smoke when passing that on the way to or from the dining room or Explorers Lounge. I don't recall seeing ashtrys in the Explorers Lounge, but don't know for sure. Neither of us smoke.

There was "cigars under the stars", but I don't know where that was held.

There was smoking outside and this included the outside aft deck on the lido deck. I assume could eat out there if you wanted a cigarette with your meal.

Smoking used to be allowed in one corner of the Crow's Nest and maybe at the bar, but I believe another thread mentioned that area is now "no smoking" too.

 

Unless it has changed, food was not supposed to be taken to the aft pool area on the Westerdam. Maybe coffee or a drink would be permitted, but I don't recall any service there at all.

During the day, you can bring your lunch to AFT Pool and eat outside at tables there. A steward will get you whatever beverage you wish.

I appreciate the OP starting this thread. I had no idea HAL was cracking down on smoling so much. I just received an attractive offer for a cruise next January that I was considering (our 40th anniversary) but, since my wife and I both smoke, it looks like we'll have to look at another line. After smoking for over 50 years, I refuse to be sent to my room for it! :(

Smoking is still permitted on the ships.

 

You can smoke in your cabin, on your veranda if you have one. There are smoking sections at Ocean Bar andCrowsNest. Sports Bar (on Vista) permits smoking and one side of aft pool. Smoking is permitted in those places and perhaps others.

 

Most cruise lines are limiting smoking areas more and more and I don't think HAL is more stringent that other mass market. There are others more limiting than HAL.

 

We don't smoke but enjoy sitting at Ocean Bar rather than at one of the tables when we are by ourselves. That is a smoking section and it is rare when anyone's smoke bothers us. Occassionally it does, but most of the time we are fine. If we don't wish to be near it, we move.

Anyone know if there is a "Sea View Bar" on the Prinsendam? It's the aft bar by the pool usually sheltered on the other ships. I didn't see it on the deck plans and that is a place I like to "chill".

CC has some valuable information, this thread is an example. I advised some friends to read this since they were booked on Hal and some of them do smoke. They have many Hal cruises under their belts. There were 3 couples, and they have cancelled their cruise on Hal and booked another line. They don't like surprises and were not happy with the fact that Hal did not publish any new smoking policies or set a future date when a policy would go into effect.

What is the drastic change they made that is so upsetting to these couples? So far as I know, the only change is they eliminated smoking at abou 4 tables at aft pool outside Lido. Some Casinos have smoking/non-smoking experiments on-going but what other changes are there that are so troublesome to your friends that they cancelled?

 

Over 4 or 5 tables outside Lido? I have to be missing something. :confused:
