cruisinglisa Posted August 10, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2007 We will be going on a cruise that includes Athens and Rome, in October (2008). I've read a lot of posts saying that the lines at these locations are terrible... Is that only in the summer, or in the Fall too? Thanks!
Compass Rose Monica Posted August 10, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2007 October is still considered high season, but I don't think it will be as bad as June - Sept.
Nonna and Papa Posted August 10, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 10, 2007 We were in Rome during the second week of October a few years ago. We never encountered a long wait anywhere, including the Vatican museum. We arrived about 30 - 40 minutes prior to opening time, and when the door opened, we walked right in. Same experience with St. Peter's and the Colosseum. At that time of year, we found the daytime temperatures to be warm (70's) and sunny. Be prepared for rain at any time, though. IMO, it's a great time to go. Mary
mountainmare Posted August 10, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 10, 2007 Our Barcelona to Venice cruise left Oct 5 last year. This seemed to hit a German holiday time and Rome was very crowded, we hit a Greek holiday in Athens and it was mobbed. We had a guide for the Vatican and still stood in line about an hour, because the president of Greece was out and about the lines and security were everywhere in Athens. All other places were ok. Very good time to go weather wise and crowd wise although as others have noted there can be anomalies on specific dates:) :) :D :D
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 10, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 10, 2007 October is lots better than the summer months both in terms of weather and less tourists, but with that said some locations will still have lines for certain attractions but those lines will be less than what you see in the summer months. Billiam Posted August 10, 2007 #7 Share Posted August 10, 2007 Germany celebrates a nation holiday, Day of Unity, on Oct. 3 this year. This date was changed some time back to correspond with the falling of the Berlin Wall. This may be the day a poster referred to above as being crowded.
