icanflossu Posted January 10, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 10, 2008 I've done a search on wine and have been reading for over an hour now. I can't for one second believe that I am going to get on a cruise ship with only 4 different kinds of cabernet. Someone please tell me that I can get some good wine on these ships. Last time I was on RCCL (two years ago) I just sent a case of wine through with my luggage and went to the naughty room to pay my corkage fees. I don't mind having to buy it on the ship, but come on, is that list really all they have? I'm looking for some stag's leap, duckhorn, cakebread.....we're celebrating, don't stick me with modavi PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
cruisindoggie Posted January 10, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2008 Do not rely on the list you read. Those wines are for pre pay packages. RCCL has an extensive cellar on board. Just be prepared to pay 3 times the normal wine store prices you find locally. No different than the price you pay at a 4 or 5 star dining venue. Just be prepared to pay 3 times the normal wine store prices you find locally. No different than the price you pay at a 4 or 5 star dining venue. I wouldn't call it an extensive cellar by any means. They do have more then you are probably seeing on your list though. If you are on one of the bigger ships they will have a wine list for regular bars, one for the vintages wine bar, one of the main dining room, and one for each specialty restaurant. IF you find something you like on ANY of these, they will generally get it for you from the other location. Example: I wanted to get some wine for our group of 12 people at Chops on Liberty last month. I needed to get several bottles for that size group, so I ordered the Cline Red Zin (a relative bargain at $27) , even though it wasn't on the menu at Chops. It wasn't on the menu, but they happened to have 2 bottles up there to get us started, after pouring them he went down and got 2 more for us). I personally don't buy really good wine on a cruise ship. I wouldn't cellar a good wine on a constantly moving boat, nor will I pay top $ for one that has been kept on a moving boat. I would assume their higher end stuff has much less turnover then their mid priced, so it's been rocking around for much longer. As far as the first reply of paying 3x wine store price, well of course you will, you are at a resort restaurant/bar, not Costco.
AnneinSand Posted January 10, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2008 Can someone please tell me the corkage fee rules and amount? I have asked a few other times with no response other than that RCI didn't have such a policy. I am interested in bringing my own wine for the DR and paying the per bottle corkage fee. It sounds like this is in fact possible?

It sounds like this is in fact possible? Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean no longer allows you to bring wine on board. So the reason there is no corkage policy is because you can't bring personal wines on board with you.

It sounds like this is in fact possible? It *used* to be possible, but this is no longer the case. RCI does not allow any wine (or any other alcoholic beverage, for that matter) to be brought onboard. I believe that, so far, RCI is the only popular cruise line with such a strict policy. AnneinSand Posted January 10, 2008 #8 Share Posted January 10, 2008 That's a big disappointment for me. But I suppose I will get over it. I am used to Celebrity that not only allowed it, but had a very low corkage fee (15-20/bottle i believe) Oh well.
camella Posted March 2, 2008 #9 Share Posted March 2, 2008 To make matters worse, I even wrote RCCI an email about their inadequate wine list and they basically told me to stick it. I told my travel agent not to book me on them until they change. It's a shame too because we'd love to go on some of the newer ships. We too are loyal Celebrity customers. They are owned by the same company. Why can't they just get their act together with the wine list. It CAN'T be that big of a deal for them to change it. Also, why don't they allow you to bring your own on board and keep it for you if they are so "afraid" that you may consume some in your room? Geez..just doesn't make sense! Leafpeeper Posted March 2, 2008 #12 Share Posted March 2, 2008 Wow, that is quite a list for a posting. Good Job! Did you have a problem because you brought wine on in your carryon or was it in your checked luggage? I do think two bottles of wine (1 pp) should be allowed onboard. You can ask you TA to order your wine. Most TA's order one bottle for your welcome aboard gift. NCL is very tough. They xray both carryons and checked bags for bottles, but do allow wine for $15 corkage fee.

Bufordite Posted March 2, 2008 #15 Share Posted March 2, 2008 We have similar taste in wine. I only do weekenders with the girlfriends on the Sovereign so there's nothing on the menu (no Chops or Portofino) that would compliment Cakebread, therefore I've never carried on wine. I would just carry on a few bottles in your carry on bag. They do scan the bags but if you are caught you will get your wine back at the end of the cruise. I carry a bottle to sip on for the room and make no attempt to hide it and no one has said boo, yet. Slip your waiter $20 and tell him you are a wine snob and I think you will be fine. Worst case scenario, you could be denied boarding but I think that would be more likely if you were under aged and packing Everclear or something crazy that screamed "overboard waiting to happen". wwaggone Posted March 3, 2008 #16 Share Posted March 3, 2008 we just got back from the Legend in January and we ordered a bottle of Malbec wine for a change of pace. It was one of the best wines, better than the cabs we usually drink. You might want to give a try. I can't remember the name or year, but it was the only one offered at the time. Best wine of the entire cruise.

Try have two people really into French and Italian wines, taking their HM in Italy on a RCL cruise and being told all you can drink is that list.... some of the best and cheapest wines in the world and they still serve Mondavi and Beringer. You think that they could restock in the Med to get some better wines that would carry through the experience so it isn't US on the ship and Italy on land... :( I think it stinks that I would have to pay $3000 per person more to sail on another line, just so I could bring wine on that costs $12 (I would gladly pay the corkage if I could). RCL is the only line we can afford that has the itinerary. If it weren't our HM we probably won't sail them again, which unfortunately means that we won't be able to cruise since we can't afford the other lines so much. (We ruled out Carnival, I'm talking Princess, Celebrity, etc)
cruiserbryce Posted March 3, 2008 #18 Share Posted March 3, 2008 unfortunatly since we all have our favorites from time to time we will run into places that dont have what we prefer...I have always felt that RC offers a reasonable large wine list for a cruise line...thank you to the poster that shared the list...and really...OP...if its that big of a deal there are other lines out there

They cracked down and made it NO alcohol this past summer. You won't be able to just waltz on with bottles in your carryon anymore. Actually, before I left for my cruise last May, there were many discussions on here regarding having alcohol confiscated and having to go to the naughty room after being caught with booze in baggage. Whether or not the actual policy was in effect for my May sailing or not, I was well aware of recent difficulties as I placed my carry on bag on the belt as I was boarding. The best solution would be for customers to be able to contact the sommelier and prepay for any special wines that you would like to have on their cruise. I'm not cheap and I don't mind paying for the ship's booze but if you are really into wines the selection onboard leaves a lot to be desired. Do what you want but it's pretty clear that RCCL does not permit you to bring any alcohol onboard now, nor are they allowing deliveries to the ships that I am aware of. I do know carry on's, luggage are scanned/searched and there have been reports on CC that alcohol has been removed from cabins. You may order wine from RCCL from the list that is posted:) This is from the updated RCCL Guest Code Policy Guests are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onboard for consumption or any other purpose. Alcoholic beverages that are purchased from onboard shops or in ports of call (which must be presentedto security upon re-boarding), will be secured by ship’s personnel and delivered to the guest’s stateroomjust prior to the conclusion of the cruise. Security may inspect containers (water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, luggage, etc.) at any time, and those concealing or attempting to conceal alcohol will besubject to action pursuant to the “Consequences Section” of this Guest Conduct Policy. Guests under theage of 21 who possess alcohol in violation of this policy will not have alcohol returned to them andappropriate consequences will be considered, including but not limited to loss of privileges to use thedisco or other areas or facilities of the ship.Guests who violate any alcohol policy, including but not limited to underage drinking; providing alcohol tominor(s); possessing, concealing or attempting to conceal alcoholic items in their luggage, whenboarding, or while on board; or failing to consume alcohol responsibly, will be considered for discipline under the provisions of this policy.
