trish1c Posted January 24, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 24, 2008 It was OK. The music is LOUD. I felt like I was on an MTV Spring Break set -- lots of noise, busy bar scene, dumb drinking games. For $15 pp you got a lounge chair, a "free" drink, use of their facilities & a ride back to the ship. It wasn't the worst day at the beach but we had rainy weather so it wasn't the best either. Understand what you are getting into if you go.

barante Posted January 26, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2008 Two years ago we went to Boatyard and had a nice time. Last year we went to Brighton Beach instead. It's a long deserted beach that has bathroom and changing facilities, chair rental and a restaurant. We enjoyed it. This March we will go to Accra Beach. I expect it to be somewhere in between, with more local flavor.
trish1c Posted February 5, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted February 5, 2008 It wasn't bad, it was just loud. I think I would have had more fun if it didn't rain but that certainly wasn't their fault.

Brighton is laid back,alright.. perhaps too quiet. You'll like Accra. Us locals sure do! and I don't think anyone (local or visitor) ever said he disliked Accra. It's not a popular beach for nuthin! http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/cncisland/bigships/Accra.html

I've heard the taxi drivers by the pier sometimes aren't real thrilled to take you to places other than where they want to take you. Are there chair & umbrella rentals? Is it far from the port? Thanks so much and love those pictures!!! Janice
SmokinActuary Posted February 7, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 7, 2008 I am planning on taking the bus to Accra and most likely cabbing it back. I do not want to deal with the aggressive cabbies at the port.
Aplmac Posted February 8, 2008 #8 Share Posted February 8, 2008 Accra Beach looks beautiful!! ===> It'll do..:)Is it pretty easy to get a taxi to get there? ===> Yes. I've heard the taxi drivers by the pier sometimes aren't real thrilled to take you to places other than where they want to take you. ===> and who's in charge? You with the money? or him? Are there chair & umbrella rentals? ===> yes. Is it far from the port? ===> 15 mins. Keep walking past the first taxi guys you'll come to. Get out, past the Port's Gatehouse (you'll see Policeman and Customs guy at the gatehouse) The regular taxi guys outside the gatehouse are far more tractable and will take you to Accra/Rockley, on the South Coast. Tell them you wanna go to the public part of Accra Beach NOT the hotel unless you like the hotel sorta thing,in which case....

One Eye Open Posted February 8, 2008 #10 Share Posted February 8, 2008 Boatyard turned me off, went to Lobster Alive next door. 2 lounge chairs, 1 umbrella, 3 free drinks (1 for each rental) for a whopping total of $15. Easy walk from/to the cruise terminal. Even grabbed a roti on the way back to the ship. No fuss, no raised eyebrow.
3dlinder Posted February 20, 2008 #11 Share Posted February 20, 2008 We asked our cab driver to bring us to the Boatyard.......he happened to bring up to the next "beach bar" which is "Lobster Alive" What a great thing! Lobster ALive is right next door to the Boatyard......$15 gets you 2 beach chairs with umbrella, (as opposed to 1 at the boatyard!) and 2 drink tickets. The drinks are the same everywhere....soda, bottle of water or a rum punch. The young man at Lobster Alive was wonderful.......we sat for almost 2 hrs before he even asked us for any money....set us up about 25 feet from the water, and even told to stay away from a certain vendor who was around....said he was "dirty"....we could hear the music from the Boatyard...and yes, it was LOUD! Our friends went over to the Boatyard to see what they offered for lunch, and were turned away because they had lobster alive bracelets on!! Sharon said "we want lunch, we are going to spend money.....and they said "get out!!" Lobster Alive set out a very nice lunch menu, had a little band playing, cloth placemats and napkins...very nice for a "beach bar"though and our friends said it was wonderful......it rained.....in the heat..it felt really good, and stopped in about 10 minutes! When we were ready to go the young man that got us our seats got us a cab to get back to the ship, there were quite a few parked on the street,.....wonderful day! I would recommend "Lobster ALive!" mollydogsmom Posted February 20, 2008 #12 Share Posted February 20, 2008 Hi Linda...I'm following you on the boards.... We were with 3Dlinder at Lobster Alive and had a great time. I just wish I would have tried the food! Their rum punch was pretty good. I stayed in the water alot that day. Clear blue water and white sand...nothing better. We were on Barbados on Sunday when EVERYTHING but the beaches close. I would have done the beaches anyway though.

2112 Posted February 27, 2008 #14 Share Posted February 27, 2008 I keep hearing about the loud music at the Boatyard, but I have yet to hear what KIND or music it is. Rock? Hip Hop? Reggae? Techno?

Yes Virginia, there is a pleasant alternative to Boatyard, - on the same beach ..same biiig umbrellas, better seafood and of course LIVE Lobster in a huge salt-water tank if only to look at and admire! Aplmac Posted February 28, 2008 #17 Share Posted February 28, 2008 Does Lobster Alive have water activities like the boat yard? esp. jet skiing? There are watersports guys cruising the coastline, up and downthey'll pass by looking for you as much as you're lookin for them! Watersports offers will be there. Jet-ski guys particularly ...cruise the coastline looking for YOU. Just give them a big wave and they'll be right over! You can't avoid them! :D _____________________________ here are a few pics to get you going..

We won't have time for the whole day snorkel trip; we'd just like to go out for a few hours. Thanks! We'll be there next Wednesday!

cavy68 Posted April 14, 2008 #21 Share Posted April 14, 2008 boat yard music is for the most part-hip hop. volume is high at bar but ok at waters edge and in water. my 14 & 17 year old daughters loved it! the wife and i are 40 and i prefer rock it was fine. i took a long walk on the beach and that was great! lobsters alive prices seemed a little steep for the island but hey thats me! Aplmac Posted April 14, 2008 #22 Share Posted April 14, 2008 i took a long walk on the beach and that was great! Lobster Alive prices seemed a little steep for the island but hey thats me! Those menu prices are quoted in Barbados Dollars the value of which is half that of the American Dollar. Example: if the menu said $30 - that's $15 in "Real Money" ;)
